Starting Rebuild-Roller or Flat Tap
Im stuck inbetween a rock and a hard place. I have a 305 roller (LB9)150k miles and i have a 350 flat tappet (3970014....350...70-76"...2 or 4main). I really want to go back roller but i cant really find a 1pc seal 350 that i can afford considering $$$ for the rebuild. If i retrofit lifters, i couldnt get them less than $300 plus id have to buy a roller cam that im not getting for less than $200. Thats $500 minimun. How well are yall running with flat tap motors. Im going to port my lb9 heads and have them worked alittle and use my stock TPI for the time being. I can always upgrade the top half later. Tuning is no thing b/c im doing my own .bin editing. Im going to try and go with a summit rebuild kit with about 10.0:1 cr w/lb9 heads.
Question: Wait a while till i find a roller block/reto lifters or go ahead and build the flat tap motor.
Im going to try and achieve low 14's by spring on a stock LTR setup. Is this possible with a flat tap motor
What are yall running? And how satisfied are you?

Flat tappets will be fine.
Whether you'll get low-14's with stock runners depends upon how you put the entire package together and how you tune it.

Roller will almost always make more mid-range torque for a given rpm range due to their aggressive profile.
I'll take the extra 45 cubes over a roller cam any day of the week on the street. Plus there are a lot more choices in aftermarket performance heads for a 4" bore 350 than for the little-bore 305 should you be planning on upgrading the heads now or at some point in the future.

I think im fixing to go with the flat tap motor. So you think the $500 minimum im going to save with going with a flat tap motor will make its self up somewhere else. As in exhaust, intake, etc.
Thanks for the replys people.

For money reasons im staying with the lb9 heads. Will they accept any larger valves? Im going to port them myself but get someone else to freshen them up. Im going to get 7/16 screw in studs, stud girtle, mag roller rocks, and wanting to go with something like a .480lift 240dur single pattern cam. But will lb9 heads accept larger valves?

What i had in mind was the Comp Cam K-kit-They come with Cam, Lifters, time chain, springs, retainers, valve locks and valve stem seals for $310.00
Cam Specs------------------230*/230* .480/.480
or should i go with the---244*/244* .501/.501
This is my plan on parts
350
cleaned, honed and possibly bored(depends on finish)
Sealed Power_Fel Pro SBC 350 rebuild kit with 9.35:1
Hypereutectic pistons-64cc chamber Assuming 10.?
with the 58cc
LB9 heads
cleaned, 3 angle, (bowl blend, polished runners and
chambers-doing myself). Staying 58cc
TF 2.02int. 1.60exh valves. Is that possible?
Summit 3/8 or 7/16 screw-in studs
Summit Steel RR's 1.6
Stock Plenum
EGR walls cut down and runners siamesed
already
Stock Runners
Cleaned and matched to plenum
Stock Base
not siamesed but maybe opened alittle and
polished
SLP Fuel Injectors
#25
DIY Tune
A/C Delco Rapid Fire plugs
Later in the spring i plan on getting a MSD 6A, Blaster coil,
8.8 wires, Flowtech headers, MTI cut-out
All suggestions are welcome. Im shooting for high 13's by the end of summer when i get the HSR on the same block.
Right now with the stock LB9(look in sig), A4, 2.73, JGA im getting 15.1@90 with a 2.20 60ft
Im going to get about a 2500stall and i already have a vette servo just havnt put it in.
Tell me were im going wrong. This is on about a $1,000 budget for the block and heads only.
