Strange problem
Hello everyone! I'm having a problem with my car. There is a buzing sound like gears spinning that it's coming from behind the dash it feels as if it is where the gages are at. The thing is that they are spinning even after the car is not running as soon as I turn the key to the off possition they start spinning and it is starting to drain my battery. I have no idea what this could be. Would you guys help me with this?
Thank you.
Chris

Its your speedometer, or cable. The cable needs lube every once and awhile, you can pick it up at a auto parts store.

The thing is that it is doing it when then car is not running and it is actually shut off. When I put the key in and turn it to the "ON" position it stops making the sound when I turn it to the "OFF" position it starts again.
That's a weird one I'll admit. It does sound like when the speedo cable needs to be lubbed up but that only happens when you are going down the road and the speedometer is running.
This is doing it when the car is not running at all. The car by the way is a 1982 trans am.
Thanks for the reply..

if I read that correctly... it makes the noise when the ignition is in the "run" position, as well as when the car is running.
It sounds like either
a) your fan is hard-wired on all the time
b) your a/c is hard wired on all the time, or you have it on all the time but dont realize it.
c) noisy *** fuel pump

Ok yesterday we found the relay that was making the buzzing sound under the dash near the center console. The thing is that we removed it and now the choke light is on and the carburator doesn't seem to be running right like the choke is not working properly.
I've searching the board and I found that the relay could actually a "Choke Heater Relay". It had a metal color with a green bottom or something like that (the mechanic took it out). He said it was a chime module but the car started acting up this morning when cold.
I've been looking in the autozone website for this relay but it isn't listed. Is the proper name for this relay "Choke Heater Relay" or does it go by a different name and can anyone else describe what this relay looks like to see if I'm right?
Thanks everyone.

The problem is not the relay. The relay buzzing is merely the symptom.
It is operated by the alternator. i.e. when the alt is charging, the relay is operated; when the alt is not charging, the relay does not operate.
Your alternator is defective such that it charges for only part of the time.
Put the relay back, and leave it alone. There's nothing wring with it. You need a new alt.
Also make sure your "Choke" light comes on, when you turn the key "On" with the engine not running. The light that's labelled "Choke" is actually the "Alternator" light.

I completelly agree with you the only problem is that the mechanic threw the relay away so I'm not sure what kind of relay it was. That's why I was wondering if it is a special relay with part number OR just any relay would do.
Is it a 20 amp relay?
Thanks
Chris

Well it needs to be able to plug in...
It's not real "special" or anything. I don't have a part # though. You can probably get one out of any car of about th esame age at the junkyard.
Here's the schematic for the circuit that includes it.
Incidentally, the bulb labelled "Volts Indicator" is the Choke light.

So if I were to go to autozone or pepboys which are closer than any of the junkyards (about 70 miles away) would there be a relay that I could use as direct replacement like 20 or 30 amp relay? Or do I have to get it from a junked car, are there no new replacement parts?
Thanks for all the help.

I doubt a "universal" one of any sort would work; mostly because it probably wouldn't plug in. But, you might try partsamerica.com or gmgoodwrench.com or acdelco.com or napaonline.com and see if any of them have a listing for it. It'll be called the "choke relay".

Here's an example; go to partsamerica.com enter a 1984 Camaro 305 4-barrle VIN G (HO) and type in "relay" in teh search, and a category called "choke relay" is in the list http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductL...=Choke%20Relay
