Oil Pan
I have developed a leaking drain plug and it looks like I will need to replace the oil pan. Can anyone tell me if this can be done with the L-98 engine in a '89 RS by raising the engine or will more drastic measures be necessary?

Sorry for the post. I finally figured out the "search" feature and think I have the information I need. Looks like a somewhat difficult job but not impossible.

I believe you are able to buy an oversized drain plug or helicoil it. Would be much easier than changing the pan. I've never had to use either method, always changed my own oil and never overtq'd the plug.

Could but if you use a shop vac next to the bit whie it's drilling it won't. Can always rinse the area with parts cleaner too. I'd do both.

Or buy a cheap quart of "flushing oil" and pour it in the valve cover and let it flush the debris out of the drain plug hole. Gravity rules!
I'd try all options before I resorted to pulling the pan off.

I have tried both - a new plug and gasket. I don't believe it will really solve the problem to my satisfaction. Also at one time or another the oil pan has also been dented near the bottom center so it appears the best approach would be to do it right, especially since I plan to keep the car for quite awhile.
I appears the best suggestions are -
1. Remove the bolts and release the motor mounts.
2. Remove the distributor cap
3. Put a block of wood under the harmonic balancer and jack the engine up as high as possible.
4. Ensure the engine is TDC on #4 cylinder.
5. Have a BFH handy just in case.
I would like to put a bigger capacity oil pan on while I am at it. Anyone have a suggestion for a 6 or 7 quart one piece rear seal that will clear most obsticles that a car that has been lowered about two inches all around, stock starter and uses the 1218 larger AC oil filter might encounter?
