Any problem using new lifters on a used cam?
I know there is a problem going the other way, old lifters on a new cam..does it work the other way? I'm sick to death of my crappy variable duration lifters..and am thinking about swapping them out for normal ones. The cam only has a couple hours of running time on it.

You can put NEW lifters on an old cam as long as the cam is in good shape. What kind of variable duration lifters do you have in it now? I have had some Crane variable duration lifters in my old Dodge Dart for 10 years and never had any problem or noise from them and they made the car a little faster too.

I have Cranes....do you have any tips for how to get the lash set right? at 3/4 turn, they still tap like hell. At 1 turn, the valves won't close and it won't start. how did you set them?

Now remember this is on a Dodge 360 engine with shaft mounted roller rocker arms, but I adjusted them while the engine was still on the engine stand and turned the cam till the lifter was on the base circle of the cam, then I tightened down the nut till I had 0 lash on the pushrod and then I went another 1/4 turn. I have never heard the lifters tapping but the engine is pretty loud even with racing mufflers on it. I did prime the lifters by pumping them with a old pushrod in a can of oil before I installed them. As far a Chevys go I have always done it the same way and never had any problems but I have never used these lifters in a Chevy either. I assume you are getting good oil pressure to the lifters? I would drive the car for awhile and see if the tapping goes away and if it don't and it drives you crazy hearing them then you could change them.

I just went out and played with them on the engine with it running. I took some from 1/4 turn to about 4 turns past zero lash with no noticable change. I'm giving it one more try, then I'm scrapping them and putting in normal lifters.

I think I got the same problem as you bro! Mine are fine when I am under like 160F, but when the engine heats up, they tap like a beoch. Sounds like a bunch of crickets under my valve covers. I do 1/4 turn past zero, tighten the poly lock, then give them another 1/4 turn to tighten the nut so I don't have to re-adjust them in 3 weeks. Stud girdles help...

Personally I hate those "variable duration" lifters. I used them in other people's motors at their insistence once or twice when they were new, every time they were dissatisfied.
Since your cam doesn't have many hours on it, you can probably get away with changing out the lifters. The Chevrolet Power Manual has a few comments about it that you might want to read. They even say that old used lifters that still have convexity can be re-used on a new cam... sounds sort of risky to me, but that's what they say. Not that those guys would know anything about motors though.

LOL well I try to listen to ya
Might have just blocked this time out or something.
Will it hurt anything if I leave them in there, tapping badly for awhile? Right now I figure I'll leave them alone. I have them set at 1.2 turn. If they straighten up and stop tapping great..if not I'll replace them....eventually
