scrutinize this 1985 camaro for me please
I am hoping some of you guys can help me out a little. I live in Australia already own a 1986 IROCZ. I am looking at buying the car below.
I have talked to the owner and this is what he told me. The car in question is a 1985 IROC-Z.
I have attached the pictures he has supplied me with. I have said I will buy the car but now I am having 2nd thoughts on it. The auction ended and no bids. I contacted the seller after and we are organising the sale. He wants $12k AUD a car in this shape here is worth about 19K!
Can you guys check out these pictures and tell me what you think. I have my doubts on the following:
Over spray in the rear wheel arch is what it looks like.
The little button that turns the light off when the door is closed it painted white
The hood hinges are painted half white, that does not look normal?
The Wrong badge on the rear bumber it should be Z28.
It also does not have the original Rubber Protectors on the door from door dings.
This all leads me to believe the car has been touched up or painted.
I am getting the VIN number soon and the RPO codes. I will try and post them up and see if anyone can help me with a CARFAX on it?
Does anyone know if they even made white IROC-Zs in 1985??

would give the car at least an 8.5 out of 10,the engine and running gear are in great shape just the trans has a small leak, more like a weep my be looses about 250ml every 3 to 4 months so it is very little, the front spoiler has some scratches on the very tip of it,the rest of the paint is 8.5 out of 10 this car is 20years old and has never been restored nor does it need to be, it is in better shape than most 1998 to 2000 model commordores that you see on the road this is a no reserve on this Auction so the higest bid wins

The car appears to have been touched up in that doorjamb, and it definitley looks to have been lowered in the front, or have some very sagged coil springs. Otherwise it looks great. I guess it's your call, it does look good.
Someone over at sethirdgen asked about you the other day, we thought you'd dropped off the earth. Good to see you are still around.

Yeah? I am still around lol where is the topic where they asked about me i should pop in and say hi. I could not find the topic you are refering to.
Thanks for your opinion, it looks like it has been touched up in a few places and seeing as he has already lied with this I have kind of lost trust in it. I like it when people say the truth there could be many other things he is hiding.
I remember seeing somewhere a list of all colors available in years. But looks like it is gone. I just wondered if the IROC came out in white and as a hard top. Also the Shifter is that original for 85?

Well I just found out that the 1985 IROC-Z did not get produced in white ROFL. So much for original.

Actually it was at a cookout last summer we started the "what happened to so and so" discussion, and you were one of the ones we hadn't heard from in awhile.
It's so different to us to see a RHD car!
At least this one is in better shape than my recent project, bought it as a parts car cheap but it's too good to part out.

didn't 85 TPI use a regular V-belt alternator, though the serpentine alternator belt was used on like 86-87

good call Nova, the brake booster is on the left side... I guess GM only moved the interior parts to the right side? must be some weird hose routing...
I can't tell about the steering column, but I figure it'd have to be on the right side... (this was difficult to write, i'm used to saying drivers side, but,.....

If the car is right hand drive why is the master cylinder on the passenger side (left side). I wonder how that’s linked up.
EDIT: yea I should have read the other posts someone already asked the same thing.

Just to clarify some things for you guys.
The steering box is on the drivers side now. The original BOX has been removed and a GM RHD box from Holden has been installed in place.
There are various ways in which to do a conversion. GM never made RHD cars. They all get converted in Australia buy shops or some even do it themselves.
Conversion for 3rd gens cost anywhere from $5K USD - $10K USD
I rang up last week to price a conversion on a C5 vette $28K USD thats what kills the price on bringing these cars in. Used C5's here sell for at least double if nt triple for what they go in the USA. It is a shame if the car is not over 30years old you need to get it converted to drive it on the roads. Different states have different laws some allow 15year + cars to be left LHD.
Some are Chain conversion where everything stays on the original side as it came from the factory and a chain is used to control the steering.
Mirror conversion: This is when everything is swapped over, ie brake booster to be on the drivers side (RHS), A/C accumulator etc...
Then you have a conversion where everything stays the same except the steering box gets changed over and they have to edit the master cylinder by adding some plumping behind the dash.
The chain conversion has one benefit is that you can buy any headers in the USA that fit a LHD and pop them into the car. Once the car has been converted to RHD, LHD headers will not fit without little to serious mods.
I have decided not to buy this car. Looks like he has lied to me about the originalty of the car. That has put grave doubts in me. The car has been resprayed. The cluster has also been swapped after close examination of it. So if the bloke selling the car would have told me what he has done to it them maybe I would have not have had a problem. But once someone lies about something......
The hood hinges as you can see have 2 colors. Pretty bodgey.
