Why doesnt Ford make the new mustangs put out as much power as the new F-bodies?

And therein lies the answer to your question, meaning: they dont care.

because in gm's opinion they drove great and didn't need to. the better thing to do would have been to reduce the weight of the camaro. the 5.0 got as high as 230hp, but the car was so much heavier than a mustang it still wasn't very close in the straight line. obviously handling wise the mustang had no chance.

That is one of those crazy questions that may never be answered. Things to keep in mind...Mustang is fords fastest car, which is pretty sad because Ive seen a few in my mirror. Chevy wants to sell vettes so why would they make the f-bodies faster? why wouldnt they put a manual with the 350? they obviously had one it the parts bin that could handle the power (vettes have manuals). Just some thoughts to get your brain turning

The F-body is simply a detuned Corvette. It's been that way since the beginning. Honestly, all the Corvette is, is a status symbol. For the money you'd save by buying an F-body you can make a Camaro or Trans Am faster, better handling, and better braking with aftermarket parts than a Vette.

This is GM's problem. They can't make the F-bodies annihilate the Mustangs(except the new LS1s) because then, they'd be competing with the Corvette. If they did that, then the Corvette owners would whine and cry about how they paid so much more than the Cambird owners did and they want to be faster!

For the money, the 80s Corvettes weren't really much faster than the F-bodies. They had a little bit more power and had the 350/5 speed option. That was basically it.

So.... that's your answer.

Corvette's have either 4+3's or 6 speeds, and 4 speed auto never a 5 speed. They have mre power due to exhaust and tuning differnces. Also, because it is Chevy's top dog. GM finally realized their mistake and the LT1/LS1 cars are proof of that... There is still the weak rear and space vs size issue, but when u have torque and horsepower, who cares...

Actually Chevy did make their 5.0 put out as much as the 5.0 Stang (230hp).

Problem is that wasn't the only 305 you could get. GM dicked around with too many low output pieces of sh*t.

Ford had it right, you order a V8 car you get the hottest V8 they had that year, no screwing around with a poser version v8.

Yep, that last reply was right on target. I have the upper end 305, and I have never been disappointed. With just a couple modifications, I've raced dozens of 80's mustangs, also with minor mods, and beaten them into the ground. I've also beaten a handful of 350s.. but that's another story. Anyway, towards the end, GM got it right, with a HO 305, which could keep up with the Stangbangers. And someone else said something similar to this; the 302 was basically always the Ford top of the line motor.. so it had thick walls and was designed to put out a lot of horsepower. The 350 was always Chevy's primetime motor, and the 305 was just for A) Late 70's/early 80's smog motors and B)later it was for the man who was poor or who wanted the stick+v8 combo, but couldn't have it in a 350 cuz the torque would blow the poor little t5 up.
