New 350 wont run need help bad
First I'll give you the low down on the engine it is a 87 Camaro 350 with 11:1 comp edelbrock heads aftermarket chip new accell 26lbs. h injectors adjustable fuel psi reg. the cam is a 214 224 @.50 hyd. flat tappet cam buget wouldn't let me buy roller cam but i did put in proper tappets and rods. I allso have timing gears. The problem im having is it wont idel and back fires through intake and get really hot fast iv checked all of the easy stuff like timing making shure all the plug wires are on right. I don't think its a vac. leak but i might be wrong. allso is there a difference between the distrubter gear on my stock unit and one that would be used on a older distrubter like my cam is made for?
Your original (factory roller cam) distributor gear will be jsut fine with an aftermarket flat tappet cam. No worries there.
Bad idle is usually one of two things if the combination is otherwise well-matched:
1. Vacuum leak(s)
2. One or more valves adjusted down too far and holding them up slightly off their seat(s).

Sounds like a timing issue to me. I'm assuming this is a carbed motor? My guess is if it fires up and runs that your base timing is close enough, and if the motor gets hot quick, IE: headers get very hot very quick you need to advance your timing a bit more.

go back to #1 TDC and make sure the rotor is pointing towards the #1 cylinder. it sounds like you may have the timing off a bit.

Hmm, I think I would start with mw66nova's idea. go back to base timing and make sure its correct. I would get a good shop manual and follow their suggestions starting from distibutor installation.
