I'm an idiot

alright... so, I have a totaled 89 trans am that was in MINT condition until i let my friend drive it and total it.... anyways... still haven't got to the part about me being an idiot... i bought a junker 85 trans am.... stripped just about EVERYTHING out of it.. engine tranny, rear end, front end, interior... and i'm putting everything from the 89 in it along with some new parts..... anyways.... I was sandblasting the engine compartment.... basicly the only thing left in there was brake lines and the master cylnder... when i was done i noticed that some of my masking around the resevor lid had been blasted off , when i opened it up there was a bit of sand in there... I wiped out what i could but i'm sure there's still some in the system.... any suggestions to completely flush out the brake lines before i start putting the front and rear end in it?
Also, I had the engine and tranny that I'll be using in the garage... it was covered but some sand still ended up on it... just to be cautions i'd like to do everyything I can do flush out the engine oil, tranny fluid and coolant, cuz sand in the engine doesn't really sound very good :-P any suggestions would help, thanks...

well, in the resevor thing for the master cylinder... i cleaned out about a table spoon..... and everything else... not really that much ... i could see some sitting in the top of the tranny coolant lines... guess i could pull those off and clean 'em out pretty easily.... and i am pretty paranoid/**** about it, i've put a lot of work into this car and to have it all ****ed up cuz of a little sand would make me VERY unhappy to say the least....

....and what do u mean u would "pull it"? ... the engine isn't in the car, it was just in the garage while i was sandblasting covered for the most part.... I was prolly blasting for about 10 minutes before i decided it would be a good idea to cover it :-/ ... I don't really have time to take the whole engine apart and go through it if that's what you meant, I've gotta move out of this house by the end of the month and I only have weekends to work on it....i'm moving somewhere that doesn't have a garage :-(

so.. umm.. yeah... any suggestions for cleaning/flushing?....

you have a mother of a problem!have you used the brakes at all?if not, remove the master cylinder, clean it ,rebuild it and put it back on.then bleed the brakes.
for the motor,i would tear it down, take it to the carwash, blast the snot out of it,blow dry everything, and reassemble it.with the price of carwashes here,it might be cheaper to take it back to the shop?

no.. i haven't used the brakes... when u say "rebuild it... do u mean just take it apart and put it back together?.... and for the engine.... I have a pressure washer.... take it back to what shop? lol... i pulled the engine out of my other car... it's still connected to the tranny... and the intake base plate is still on it... and i had duct taped up the ports where the runners connect to it... basicly everything is still on it that i didn't need to take off to pull it.... I'm gunna take some pictures of it... hopefully get them on here tonight.... I haven't cleaned it at all.. so u'll have a good idea....

thanks

well, i tried taking some pictures and it didn't really show much.... but yeah... i actually just got done vaccuming it... hard to tell what progress i made tho... obviously i got everything in sight.... but who knows how much got in there... I'll prolly just drop it back in and then change the engine and tranny oil and filter every 200 hundred miles 2 or 3 times... i'm thinkin' that should be good since when u break in an engine you're supposed to change it at like 500 miles... and metal flakes seem like they've gotta be worse.... does this sound like a good idea?
....as far as the little bit that might have got in the intake.... just hope it blows through the engine quick? :-/

....bah!

Sand is composed of tiny particles of silicon dioxide, in case you skipped on your chemistry. Silicon is a metallide. It is hard and brittle, not "soft" like steel. This is the reason why sand is so effective at removing paint from metal.

Basically, if you have sand in your brake system, flush the entire system out or the entire brake system will be effectively SANDBLASTED.
