Wierd TPI Problems

I've ran searches on this but I dont get any error codes I ran the diagnostic on the car and all I got was code 12 which was the diagnostic code. It happened yesterday the car was running great I drove home then when I got in to leave about 3 hours later the car wouldnt start unless I put my to the floor and hold it till it started running. Then when it started running I had to rev it above 1500 rpm for about a minute or 2 and then it would idle around 500 rpm if I didnt rev it it would die as soon as I let off of the gas. It does this during hot starts and cold starts it seems to be worse during cold starts. Any Ideas? I am thinking it is the CTS but i'm not sure. The car runs normal after driving it about 5 minutes except sometimes I notice it having a really low idle here and there. I will check out the IAC to but it looks clean and it seems to be working ok so I dont think its the problem. The car is an 87 ta with 305 tpi. The guy that had the car before me said that the o2 has been changed about 6k ago I dont think that would be the problem anyways because its not throwing any codes. This **** is really wierd any ideas guys? Thanks - Justin

Check your MAF sensor......check your plugs too. It doesn't have a miss to it? The two things that pop into my head immediately are major vacuum leak, and MAF sensor problem...

Thanks i'll check the maf tomorrow. Could it be the CTS at all? Also can you run diagnostic on the car with the motor running using the paper clip technique? With the car off I turn the ignition on and use the paper clip all I get is code 12 the diagnostic code. Thanks - Justin

Most likely MAF relays or your f/p took a dump.

You can enter field service mode with the car running and bridging A and B, but it won't do anything for you.

Yeah like Red said....far as I'm aware, all "field service mode" seems to be good for is a rich/lean/stoich reading from the CEL during driving....and thats assuming the O2 is working properly. And being that it's not a wideband, it won't even really be that accurate....so basically it's useless.

I am going to say that I *doubt* it's your CTS, simply because what you're describing is a major driveability issue....and there are only a few sensors I see that tend to cause major issues, and the CTS, so far, hasn't been one of them.

take a look at the fuel pressure regulator, the diaphragm could have ruptured & is leaking fuel into the intake.
a quick way to check is just after you have turned the car pull the vacuum line off & see if it looks wet or if gas is coming out of it

I had a similar problem, and it only took me a week and a half to determine the IAC wasn't really moving even though the ECM thought it was....

Have you data scanned it? If you can get it to idle when warmed up, and the IAC counts are under 50, and then they ramp up to over 130 and the engine dies when the AC is turned on, try a different IAC.

May not help, but thouhgt I'd mention it.....

Well I checked the pressure regulator I pulled the vacuum hose off and checked for gas didnt see anything and it seemed to be ok. I also let the car idle and turned the a/c on to see if the motor would die because of a bad IAC but when I turned the a/c on the idle went up so the iac seemed to be ok. How do you test the maf relays and the fuel pump relays. When I turn the key forward but dont start the engine I hear the pump prime for 2 seconds but sometimes it doesnt the pump doesnt turn on is it supposed to be like that because of the fuel pressure or something? Also i'm not sure if there is a test to run to see if the maf relay is alright or not. Any more ideas? Thanks - Justin

Hey DENN_SHAH you were right on the pressure regulator. Last time I checked it I didnt see any fuel in the vacuum hose but I checked it again yesterday and it was full of gas. Thanks for the help everyone. - Justin
