I PULLED MY MOTOR TODAY (5 pics)
Me and my friend Jon did his dad's brakes this morning, then we were like "hey let's go rent an engine hoist and pull that motor." We did. It was a LOT easier than I had imagined it would be. Just disconnecting things was the stupid part. I ended up dropping my crossmember though because hey, when you have impact tools does it really matter? Three seconds and it was off.
When I pulled the transmission off, we lifted the engine on to it's balancer pulley and I quickly heard loose metal. I started laughing. I tore the oil pan off. I quickly saw the hole on the side of it, and continued. Inside I found two snapped to hell rods, and one twisted rod that was preventing the motor from completing a turn. I also saw a few broken piston skirts, and chunks of the block missing.

Rest in peace, small block Chevy, 305 TBI. (Good riddance)

carlover, the 350 is going in pretty soon. Maybe tomorrow. That 86 Buick is definitely riced out. I've spraypainted TYPE-R on it and VTEC on the sides and POWERED BY HONDA on the hood. The exhaust tip is a Chef Boyardee can. I'll take pics later

Did the motor and tranny come out together pretty easily? I am about to do that myself. I have changed a motor...and a tranny and it is easier to pull a motor. Since I don't have a lift I plan on pulling them out at the same time. Gonna do some painting/cleaning while I wait for the cash for a TCI street fighter th350.

Today I began doing menial tasks, such as cleaning and painting headers, degreasing the tranny and inspection plate, mating the engine to the tranny and new converter, replacing transmission filter, cleaning the engine bay, wiping down my tools, and shopping for parts. Today I began doing menial tasks, such as cleaning and painting headers, degreasing the tranny and inspection plate, mating the engine to the tranny and new converter, replacing transmission filter, cleaning the engine bay, wiping down my tools, and shopping for parts. Right now i just need a torque converter, which should be fairly soon, but i'm afraid of what all the little stuff i'll need is gonna cost (Sold the serpentine setup for money for the transmission, and with only 2 real "accessories" (alternator and power steering pump), no real need for it.)
Right now I know I need:
Pulleys

Hoses/fuel line
Tranny cooling line
misc. other stuff

haha Tibo, I rented that for an outrageous $45/day. I was late returning it too so I got charged THREE days instead of two. I should have just bought one.

exhaust is all complete, accessories are on, distributor is on. I may have to re-set valve lash though. I have to wire up the starter because the terminals are different sizes ('92 305 to an '88 350... they were different??? WHY.) and run a fuel route. I need the proper fittings and I'm frustrated that nobody carries the right sizes. Also, the radiator has to be reinstalled and the ATF filled. I need to do a bunch more junk to get this show on the road... But hey, it looks great!

Oh, and I KNOW I wrote in a post to make sure you drain the tranny before you pull the motor and tranny as a combo cuz it would drain through the tailshaft... so here's my "toldjaso"
BTW, do you know how many quarts of ATF we need for the 700R4's?
What do you mean by needing to run a fuel route? Make a fuel line? I had to do that ... not fun! Not fun at all! You'll need a 30" piece. And if your fuel pump and carb have the same fittings as stock, then it'll be a 3/8" NPT... NAPA carries them as "brake lines".
It took me 3 different pieces to get it right. I got a 20" and after making a couple bends (with the tubing bender) I realized I'd need bigger. So I got a 40" and soon realized that not only did I bend something backwards, but that the piece was way too long. 30" was just right.... but honestly, it'd be easier just to go to the junkyard and get one... it should be the same on any LG4 or L69 engine... which include the Caprices and tons of other cars that got the LG4.
Hope you get that beast on the road soon!

I'm guessing somewhere around 14 quarts to fill a 700r4. I bought three gallons (12 qts) and I'll see where that puts me.
The fuel line, I am just using rubber hoses. I just need to get those fittings that go into my Mallory FPR, and I have noooo idea what size they are. They didn't have anything that would help me at the hardware store either. I was there for 40 minutes with the lady and she couldn't do anything for me. I need rubber hose fittings, to threaded ends to go into the FPR.

I ended up using the second to last header bolts. With the th350 bolted on it was actually perfectly balanced. The motor is down in the car but not seated right yet. Huge storm hit and I had to get the motor covered up ASAP. Hopefully it will be nice tomorrow so I can get all the mounted put in place.
I was going to take a bunch of pictures but my brother loaned out his digi cam.
I looked at my bare engine bay and it made me realize how much stuff I have cut out. I have SOO much less stuff under the hood than you. Its crazy.

for future refrence, read the directions on the vht paint. it says to put a very light coat on the headers, just enough to add color. otherwise it will blister and flake off when it gets hot. sorry you are going to learn this the hard way. i once painted a set i had with a very light coat and they never flaked.

Motor mounts are fun. I was going to change mine while the engine was out but it looked as if I would have to have the lower control arms out as well. I don't know why they put nuts on the other side like that.

great job Token. seeing you take on a job like that gives me the motivation to have a go at it myself. I brought a 83 camaro that im planning to put cam, heads etc so i've decided to pull the motor and check everything while im at it. looking back are you glad you pulled the motor and tranny out at the same time as im unsure wether to pull just the engine? also as a rough idea how long would you say it took to pull them both ?

I didn't pull mine together but I did install them together. I think it was much easier to install them together. If you have a lift and a real transmission jack then it probably wouldn't be easier. But if you are like me and token and working in our driveway with no lift...then yes it was easier. It took me about 20 minutes to get my motor and trans seated where they need to go.

yeah preaty much the same set up as you guys apart from the fact i have a workshop. i have brought an engine lift and also have a few trolley jacks. my original plan was to disconnect the engine from the trannie and support the trannie with a trolley jack , is this possible, but seeing the pictures of token pulling them both out has put question marks in my mind as to the best way to go about it.

You can stick a piece of 2x4 and the jack underneath the pan and it will hold it up. Just keep the crossmember connected also. It is pretty simple either way.

700R4: Put 1 in Torque Converter before you put it on, then put 7 in the pan, then start it, and put in 4 more for a total of 12 quarts.
