Engine Temp guage sending unit

I got a v-6 tpi camaro. I need to replace the sending unit for the temp to the gauge... but alll the auto parts stores have npo clue what im talking about.... In the haynes manuel it calls it just that the engine temp gauge sending unit. I dont know ehre i can get it since they dont knwo it... Advanced auto went through all their senser and nothing was right. I mean its a thrid gen tpi engine... Is it possible that this is a lost part? or is it called something else? or maybe its not a third gen engine? Im out of ideas please help

A V6 TPI? No such animal. That may be the problem there....
The V6 was either MPFI or carbed, depending on the year.

Should be under Coolant Temperature Switch or something I think. I know the one that tells the computer what temp it is, is called the Coolant Temperature Sensor, but the gauge one has a different name that is at the tip of my tongue lol.

It's a temperature gauge sender, has nothing to do with the computer.

Nobody, I read sellmanb's post wrong.

That's what it's called, anyway. If they can't find it under that name then they most likely don't have it.

Try www.partsamerica.com or www.autozone.com or www.napaonline.com

Get the part # and go buy it

They have it; just because the people behind the counter don't speak English or whatever, don't accept their stupidity

Here's the correct part #s, straight off partsamerica.com (Advance). Assuming a 91 6-cyl car. If the one you got was one of these numbers, it will work.

Doesn't matter whether the motor has been replaced or not.

The gauge doesn't use a 2-prong connector.

I just posted you the part #s you need. Like VIRTUALLY ALL temp gauge sending units, they're one-prong.

What color are the wires?

That doesn't sound right.

Temp gauge is a single dark green wire.

The ECM's coolant temp sensor is black & yellow.

Tan & red sounds like the oil pressure switch for the fuel pump, or some such.

GM has been using a single dark green wire for the temp gauge (or idiot light, as the case may be) since the 50s, that I know of; maybe before that.

Where is this sensor you're trying to replace?

The temp gauge sensor should be either in the head, or in the intake manifold or water outlet; somewhere that it will be immeresd in coolant.

Look around for something with a single blade (or mushroom style... same wire connector fits both) connector and a single dark green wire.

Does your gauge not work?

Welll.... if you have a non-factory gauge, then there's a good chance that a factory sending unit won't work with it, regardless. It's certainly not very sensible to look up factory sending units, and then get mad at parts stores because the direct factory replacement they hand you isn't the right thing for your non-factory aftermarket gauge setup.

Rather than dink around with whatever the other gauge is, see if you can get your factory gauge to work. Try finding the dark green wire. If you short that wire to ground, your factory gauge should peg. Disconnect that wire, the factory gauge should sit on "cold". If you can make your gauge do that, then you need to put the right ending unit back in (the part #s I posted) and do away with the other thing.

I have no clue where the wire or the sending unit are; although I'd guess, if I was the guessing kind, that it would be on the left side of the engine somewhere. Either in the left head, or possibly in the intake manifold. But, you have a 6-cylinder, and I know absolutely nothing whatsoever about those except in the most general terms. I don't think I've ever even touched one in one of these cars, and I've seen only just a couple, ever, in anything (mostly people's S trucks, and all of those that I can recall have been carbed ones). I certainly haven't ever had one of these cars with a 6-cyl, or worked on one. Maybe somebody that knows about those can tell you more about where it is.

The factory temp gauge sender wire is a single green wire on all the thirgens as RB83L69 says. The oil pressure switch uses an orange/black and tan/white wire, IIRC. Where does the Haynes manual say the sender is?

You're talking about photo 8.6 on page 3-6? That photo shows a single wire connector in the tech's hand, and a single sutton terminal sensor threaded into the head behind the power steering reservoir. Whatever you're describing sounds like it's in the intake manifold.

The GM P/N for the sender should be 25037346. <img src="http://198.208.187.182/servlet/com.entigo.acdelcocatalog.servlet.ProcessImageServlet?languagecd=EN&countrycd=US&user=InternetUser&mfgname=&prodlinecd=&acpartnbr=25037346">
