valve seal question
was replacing the valve springs on my 416 heads and I noticed I have two seals I have the o-ring seals and then the umbrella seals. Was these umbrella type seals stock? The springs that are on it looks just like the ones I'm putting on, the Damper inside is a coil type damper. Would I be ok not using the umbrella type seals? they're deteriorated and cracking. I got a set of o ring seals with my engine gasket set.

yeah, they're tore up though and autozone wants like almost 40 bucks for a set they're sold seperately as an intake and exhaust set. Where they stock?

I don't think they were stock for your engine year...my '89 did not have them, but the set of 083's I bought from a '90 or '91 did have them.
Stock or not, the machine work is done to allow them to fit, so pop for the extra bucks and use'em...my not so humble opinion

now I'm wishing I would've kept that old 305 that was in it. I'm wandering was all was done to it. Granted the motor was shot. Once I got it out and drained the oil I heard a clank clank metal was falling out of the motor. The Valve springs that are on it look exactly like the speed pro springs that I'm puttingon it. I have a 350 in it now and I'm putting in a comp 270 H-10 cam, new lifters, valve springs, an Edelbrock 1405, and eventually headers when I get the extra money. I'm using the 416 heads. I'm looking forward to getting this thing running

I know these heads will hurt flow, but how do you think it will do with my setup? I don't plan on spinning it past 5000

I think they'll be fine for your build, personally I'd go for larger combustion chambers and (larger stock valves) to be more octane friendly on a mild build, but many have great results with porting the 416's/081 smaller chamber heads on 350's...but allmost all spend too much (IMO) to install larger valves...kinda like shining the turd...now you have a shiny turd, but it's still a turd.

i plan on using octane boost, I've figured compression around 9:1 to 10.37:1 depending on my pistons. Never had the heads off the 350, but it's late 70's and was told the pistons had a 15 cc dish

That's a heck of a swing in CR...think of it this way..
How much more per gallon will you spend on higer octane and octane booster?
Now figure the miles your drive and extra dollars over burning 87 octane.
Now,
Is it better to pop for a few hundred now for better heads, hp, etc, or shell it out over a period of time and have less hp/performance and most likely spend more over the long run?
Do you need a set of decent heads for cheap? I've a set of 083's I ported that I've done nothing with the past year. STill sitting on the bench collecting flash rust.

Well, I [paid 60 bucks for the heads, spents another 110 to have new exhasut seats installed (uncut). Don't want to to mention how much time I spent with the die grinder on them....
You can hav'em for my out of pocket expense ..170..plus shipping...
What you'll need to do to them:
Exhaust valve seat ground
Intake seats touched up to match valve grind.
I'd just opt for new valves from Summit/Jegs etc...instead of paying to have the stokers recut.
Then (gonna try to deter ya here) figure....
50-60 to ship, plus the 170 I have in them...plus new valves (about 150 or so for a decent street set) plus the valve job ...maybe 100 bucks...check shops in your area.
What I do know is the sufacing is goo, as are the guides...no money spent there..
Sooooo
You're now into about 500 bucks (again..gotta have you do the math) for a stock set of ported heads.
You can spend another 300 and have a real good set of after market heads...
See how after market just makes sense? ONly reason I mess with thisd stuff myself I'm so tight I squeek, and don't build motors for all out madness.
