240 Volt Wiring ~ Help

I don't know where to post this. The ending result will be used for detailing, it is an electric, but not electronic question. So since this forums says "don't see a forum for your topic, post it here".... then here goes. If the moderators have to lock me up and move me..... no problem.

I bought an old oven to do some baking for my powdercoating. Our shop has the following 240 volt wall outlet:

My oven has no plug end and I need to install one. It has a:
Black
White
Red
Bare

Wires and I know the bare goes to ground. Can someone ID the B/W/R in relation to the above plug for me?

thanks.......

Black- Hot, 110 single phase.

White- Neutral, (if this were DC, this would be considered the negative wire......)

Red- Hot, 110, single phase, second condutor. This is what gives ya the 220V.

Bare- Ground.

You should be able to go to any hardware store and pick up a cord with the appropriate plug on the end to hook up to the oven, and plug right into the wall. Just hook up the wires to the corresponding connections on the oven, plug it in, and you are down the road.

Good Luck.

Thanks Ploegi,

Take me a step further please. If I were plugging the above plug into the wall would this be:

White on Top
Red on Left
Black on Right

?

Mike,

That is a 50A/250V pattern (NEMA 10-50P). The top connector in your drawing should be used for the grounded condutor (not necessarily an equipment grounding condutor, but grounded). In your case, that should be white wire.

...and I was thinking about locking it, but it IS technical, after all.

...bwaaaaaahhh. That's why I came to "your" forum Vader.......you're so easy....LOL.

Seriously thanks for the help. I'm sure 240V is not very forgiving.

If I should reverse the black/red wires will I get an "out of phase" situation or will it matter?

No! DO NOT hook up the red and black wires backwards!!! If you do, the oven will get cold instead of hot!!!!

But seriously... it doesn't matter. Like Vader said, the center conductor (the "top" one in your drawing) gets the white "neutral" wire, the bare "safety ground" wire goes to the outlet's exposed metal parts, and the red and black to the other 2 blades in no particular order.

Update: I put the white wire on top, grounded the bare to some grounded conduit and hooked up the red/black to the slanted outlet..... flipped on the breaker.... sparks flew and the breaker tripped.

Then I reversed the red/black and it works fine?

Whatzzzup with that?????

Could be why you got the oven for free

I'd trace the wires into the stove and make sure the red and balck go to the elements. With 220 you should have (from your fuse box) a 110v from eack side of the box (not two 110's off the same leg), so as RB mentioned, it should not make a difference which goes to which.
