full tune, try making sure timing is set correctly, fuel filter. the works.

then after that weight reduction.

carb is really hard in the first place to help with fuel effiency.

Might want to go EFI....

what kind of mileage are you getting? any mods done to your motor?

my old dead stock 305 with its 4 barrel carb would do 17~18 highway 15~16 city with everything perfectly right, most of the time it got around 16 highway 14 city.
after i put in the 350 with a mild cam it would on occasion hit 20 highway & 17 city, if i was very light on the gas. most times i was lucky if i got if i got 18/14.
those Q-jet carbs are decent carbs,.. but trying to get them tuned perfectly dead on is a pain.

those are some killer mileages they posted there
street,.. i think i had the wrong cam in my car.

right now its getting squat for milage, especialy with the a/c on,like 5/10 city/hiway, but that was with a bad clutch and bad fluids and filters and alot of the emmisions stuff realy messed up.but i have fixed all that and want 35 hiway and 25 city, with a/c, but the electric mower is $129 and a converter is $75 plus batt and cables $50 ,so it shouldnt be that much to get it going.

Full tune-up obviously; make sure you get it all working right.

The most usual cause of terrible gas mileage, is the plugs in the base of the carb leaking. There are 4 spun-in little plugs, under the primary jets; they have fuel on top, and vacuum on the bottom. If there's a leak, which there usually is from dissimilar metal electrolysis, the engine just sucks gasoline right out of the fuel bowl. If your car is hard to start first thing in the morning, then you probably have that going on; the hard starting is caused by all the fuel draining out of the carb through the leak. The cure is to take off the carb, sand and wire-brush the metal alll around the plugs to completely fresh rough material, sterilize it with lacquer thinner or something, and epoxy over them.

It should get 14-15 city and 22-25 highway, depending on what gears you have.

OK, so it's not
bone stock
if it's got that Carter on it.

That's a good clue to your gas mileage problem right there.

DO you have a non-computerized distributor on it, with centrifugal and vacuum advance? or is that still "bone stock" too?

Well...IF you have a vaccum/centrifugal distributor than you need to find a way to lock up your torque convertor if you haven't already. I wired up a vaccum-openerated torque convertor lockup switch to mine and saw a noticable improvment in gas mileage.

So this motor was built by the previous owner 500mi ago? Nothing is stock anymore then eh? Is it even a 305? what other accessories are on it? If you drive it hard, which it sounds like you do, that mileage is normal.

Gotcha, so a rebuilt 305, but with an edelbrock carb? And a non-cc dist? Everything else stock?
Did Oreillys build the engine totally? or did someone else add the carb/dist? If they built it completely, we can assume it's the correct dist...

Then leave your foot off the gas! Aside from that, fuel filter and proper tuning of the carb and making sure you're getting good spark is about all you can do.
