Intake, Open Element, and do I really need that hood??

Alright here is an intake question. I was talking to a buddy on AIM and I mentioned the comon mod of adding an open element. And a few mods I plan on doing to hold me over till I get my crate.

Well he asked what kind of induction I'd be using for that Open Element. I DUNNO, he told me I'd have to get something like an crowl induction hood or some sort to have an open element, or it won't work....

All I have is the stock hood and I don't want to get anything different right now. So do I have to have an crowl hood or something for open element. Or will it work fine with a stock hood??

No, you don't have to get a cowl induct hood for an open element. The only reason I can think as to why you would need one is because of hood clearance problems. Other than that the open element will function fine under your stock hood. Or you would see every carbureted car riding around with cowl induction.

You don't really NEED the cowl hood, but of course it would get cooler air that way.

By the way, un4givin89, you live right near me. Are you in the Camaro club around here, cause I'm thinking about checking it out in the next few weeks.

Actually he raises a very good point.

A stock aircleaner has restricted flow due to the small opening, but it draws in cold air.

Switch to an open element, now you have all the air the car needs, but it's warm air from the engine.

I thought warm air into the engine was a drop in performance?

Granted you get more air, but what good is it if it's nothing but hot air.

Guess the dual snorkel is still the best way for us to go if we want all the gains from this mod.

Actually I believe the amount of warm air you get from an open element will increase performance more so than the dual snorkel, due to lack of air.

Yeah, you definitely don't need a cowl hood. Everyone says that the stock cleaner draws in cooler etc... Yeah, have you ever felt the cleaner after the car's been running?? It's freakin hot!. Even if it is somewhat cooler, the added flow from an open element overcomes the temp rise. It also sounds better!

Mark - I'm really close to you. Ever check out Sat. nights at Kmart with all the cars? Too bad all the rice mobiles are taking over. Maybe we can get together sometime. I actually live in owings, but go to the Univ. of MD in College Park.

Birmass-- I've been up to the car show once, definately nice cars, at first I thought you were talking about the rice punks that hang out there late at night.
I'm leaving for Frostburg tomorrow so I won't be able to go to the shows for awhile. It sucks I just got a 3:73 gears installed with posi but the car won't be ready until Monday and I leave tomorrow.

I was told you can take the rubber off your hood and it lets air come in from the back of the hood...but rain could go down there.

both are true but it really wouldnt be worth while to pull off your rubber strip from the hood. there simply wouldnt be enough air flow into the engine bay to really be worth while, just look at how tight that gap is if this little rubber gasket can seal it.

I removed it and it helped. No rain problems yet (6 months later) and you can hear the air cleaner hiss.
