Horsepower ratings aren't really a great indication of how fast a car is. A lot of other things factor in, just like drag. If you could see a dyno sheet you could tell how flat your horsepower and torque curves are, compared to his.. Just because his peak horsepower is higher than yours doesn't mean that your average horsepower throughout your rpm range isn't higher than his.. you see what I mean? The extra torque can help a lot too, thats something that imports have trouble making up for.

The figure "horsepower" is really derived from the engine's torque output through the formula:

Torque * RPM
Horsepower = -------------
5252

This goes to show that torque is more important than horsepower... the fact that you are winning because of higher torque even though peak horspower is lower.

However, there are plenty of other factors that influence the winner of the race anyway.... broader hp/torque curves, gears, etc.

Yes, your car is rated at around 170hp, and Yes you will probably win every race against that car. Those rice engines are pretty weak in real world driving, even though they may be rated at a higher horsepower than you are. For instance the honda s2000 makes 240 horsepower, but only has around 180 ft/lbs of torque at an insane rpm. If you drive those things (and I have) and shift at like a still screaming 7000rpm its slow as ****. In order for it to make its power it has to hit like 8-9k...sounds good on paper, but in real world driving feels almost underpowered.
Keep killin the rice every time you get a chance
peace

85 and others explained it pretty well...

HP is the product of torque times RPM. The thing that actually speeds up the car is torque. To get a high HP number you could have a relatively high torque at a relatively low RPM, or moderate torque at a ver high RPM, or some other similar combination. Also keep in mind that those are peak HP ratings; if there's not much at jsut a few RPMs below that peak and a few above it, then it doesn't really matter what the peak value is, because the engine spends so little of its time there.

I don't really care what kind of magic numbers those guys can miracle up and print on their glossy ads and get yuppies to fall for. In the real world, power comes from burning gasoline, efficiently; once you achieve a certain level of efficiency, if you want to get more power, you have to burn more gasoline; burning gasoline requires air; air requires space, and flow. There's the keys to power: displacement, and flow. If you're missing either one, someone with more of it will stomp you.

I also have a L03 TBI in my 90 Firebird. For the past 2 years that I have owned it, I thought it was a formula. But according to this site, I guess it's not. But it does haul butt.

I dont' get how torque is soooo much more important than horsepower. If that's so, how come some diesel mack trucks wouldn't kick some major *** . I mean, they have like 400 torque at 1400 RPM or something.

I had my L03 Camaro on a dyno two weeks ago getting a base line for future mods.

155 rwhp & 241 rwtorque

182 hp & 284 torque with 18% adjustment for the driveline.

The only mods are a Hooker cat-back, Edelbrock water pump, K&N filter and 180 degree thermostat. L03's torque spikes up at a very low RPM (2400) and stays fairly level until it tops 4000 and the drops like a rock.
