i have a really bad feeling about this!!!

i had the intake manafold bolts in the holes so i knew where to find them... when taking one of them out, i lost my grip on it, and it went down the whole the distributor goes down in.... i have a very bad sinking feeling that i am royally $crewed!

i put my finger in the to see if i could feel it, and all i felt was the cam... is their an easy way to get this out?

i just got the engine in last week, and i really dont want to have to take it back out...

Try using a magnetic pick up tool, or the one with the expanding claw. They have them at most parts stores.

Do what Simon says,

I lost a bolt in the dist hole and retrieved it with one of those magnet things. The hardest thing is the magnet trys to stick to everthing else on its way down the hole.

Is the iol pump shaft installed? If not, and you can't see it at all, it may be in the lifter valley. The magnet pick up would work best for this. Just a thought.

I hear ya! I did the same thing once. I had to take the intake manifold off and the bolt was sitting under the spider that holds the lifters in place. Maybe you're lucky and it didn't fall all the way to the bottom of the engine.

I did this not too long ago. You're pretty much pulling off the oil pan. You might be able to get it without lifting the engine but most likely you will have to lift it. It's not [i]that[\i] bad. what if you didn't realize that you dropped the bolt in there. that would be bad.

The oil pump shaft sticks up beside the cam gear, the distributor turns it when the cam turns the distributor gear. It is directly down the distributor hole.

Hopefully it is in your lifter valley, if not its probably sitting at the bottom of your oil pan. Now you see why I shove a piece of newspaper in that hole when I have my dist. out.
