cranks when on jack, not on ground???

hi, i have a '90 IROC manual converted to auto, and aftermarket alarm. i went to start my car today and it wouldnt turn over. nothing. so i jack up the car, tap on the starter, fool with some wires and amazingly it starts, so i lower it and then it wont start. i jack it back up and start it 10 times in a row, no problem. then i let it down again and nothing. i have no idea wtf happed to my car???

Welcome to thirdgen.org!

Some alrms have a mercury switch (like the one in you hoodlight) to trip the alarm when the car is bumped...could be it's out of adjustment...I only mention this because you mentioned alarm...can you diasble the alarm?

Other possibility is you have a bad connection that gets met by tweaking on the chassis when lifted...this may be tough to find.

thanks for the tip thats what i thought, i lowerd the car bit by bit and i figured out that it works perfectly until about 3 inches off the ground, it wont do anything.

if the car was raised would there be anything in the starter that would do that?

it was auto converted before i bought it and it has always started no matter what gear its in: park, 1st, drive, neutral.. so i dont think a neutral switch is part of the problem.

i will call viper tomorrow to ask about the alarm.. all these mods were on the car when i bought it last fall.

Naw, nothing in the starter would cause that...assume you lowered it slowly and found the bad spot? I'd bet your weeks pay (not mine, single income and a houseful of kids) it'd be the alarm system.

Good luck.

now that's a good one!
you could try moving the alarm box a bit, also check the wiring right at the starter.make sure it's free of corrosion, and inspect the battery cable that runs to the starter(especially if you have headers!).

i thought only fords had problems like this!lmao!
