I've seen a few thirdgens without a smog pump and i really want to get rid of mine because it makes noise but I dunno if i'll pass smog. (I guess i could put it back on for testing???)

So, why do some cars not have Smog pumps??? Was it based on the state the car was sold in??

Every one sold in the US had the smog pump factory installed. If you have seen them missing, they were removed by either the current or previous owner. The question that comes to my mind is why would you want to remove it?

If they all came with one, how do you explain a bracket with a pulley in place of the smog pump??
Nobody makes that so i was led to believe that it was from the factory. It was on a V6 5 speed, BTW. Maybe all V8's came with them??

One GOOD argument for removing it is underhood appearance and making things easier to service. That's why I took all my AIR system components off. It won't give you any power improvements, but I sure like working on mine a whole lot more now. Just my $0.02.

I want to get rid of it because my original one was making wierd noises so i replaced it. Now, about 1 1/2 years later, it's making noise again and it's really friekin annoying.

The pulley and bracket's there on some of the deleted cars becuase whoever did it felt like buying the SMOG DELETE PULLEY from GMparts, not beacause they came like that. Just figured I'd help. If anyone knows different, lemme know

 

Ok, WHY would a smog "delete" pulley EXIST if it wasn't originally available?? I'm having a hard time believing this.

Ok, we've got 6 people on the V6 board that don't have a smog pump and they didn't remove it. Maybe only all V8's came with them??

mine has the pump, and your theory would make sense as a v6 puts out less amounts of harmful gases than a v8.

As far as I know, all V8 thirdgens had pumps...the reason you can get a smog pump delete pulley is cause most the trucks didn't have pumps on the V8s...this is where the pulley comes from.

Same motor...different pulley/belt set-up.

This is off the top of my head...anyone else?

not all cars have them. on my 3.1 Lumina there is no pump. There was a pump on my L98 though which i took off and it still passes e check with flying colors.

 

Hey, just so you know.. all V8's came with smog pulleys except in the mideast where, of course, GM still makes trucks with 454s, etc, due to their lack of emissions laws. By the by, I took off my smog system and replaced my cats with high flow cats (i don't take emissions tests, therefore it's unnecessary). Since I did that, I've noticed that the rich mixture that caused smoke to come out of my tailpipes when I coldstarted my car has ceased to exist, making me a happy camper. And combined with my anti-A.I.R. headers, changing spark plugs is SOOOOOOOOOO much easier.

Are you talking all V8s?? Or just trucks??

In CA I work on CA certified trucks ALL the time with NO air pump. I also work on 454 trucks.

They haven't made a true "49 state" car/truck in some time. Even all the federal cars/trucks have CA emmisions and smog pumps where applicable.

I do smogs on gov. trucks from all over the country and they all have the smog stuff.

I'm not sure I understood your answer.

As far as the original question, on Thirdgens they all had smog pumps, no matter where they came from. Even my fed. smogged TA had one.

Yes, living in Pasadena, you will need a pump, its part of the visual test.
