My Introduction(and my Problem)

Hi. My name is Justin and im 16 years old. I have a 1987 Camaro Sport Coupe(base model) with a 305 V-8. This is not a TPI engine, BTW. The engine has been rebuilt, and only has 77,000 miles on it. It is white right now, but by next fall it will be midnight blue. Heres my problem:

When i crank up the car, you have to keep revving it up to get it to stay on. It drives fine, as my uncle has drove it from Raleigh, NC to Nashville, TN and back. But anytime you take your foot off the gas, it idles right off. Some people have told me it is a bad vaccum hose, a bad carburetor, and just a bad engine. The problem with the last two is the engine was rebuilt about 5 years ago, and the meter only reads 77,000 miles. Its been tuned up and the timing set. What do you think is the problem, and how much to fix it, part wise. Thanks.

Justin

You might want to try adjusting your idle screw on the carb. If you look at the linkage on the drivers side, there will be a screw lying horizontal on the linkage that stops it from going back to far, thus setting you idle. If you screw it in some, the carb will stay open a little but more and it will idle. IF its a vacuum line, you pretty much just gotta find the leak. Theres not too many vaccum hoses, so i would just go ahead and replace them all. Vacuum hose is cheap, and it's a nice start to getting acquainted with your engine. Good luck, and welcome to the board

Eric

Thanks

MK,

Welcome Aboard!

I could be mistaken, but unless you have replaced the fuel system when the engine was rebuilt, the stock '87 Camaro SC should have a TBI system, not a carburetor. Or was that 1988? This would change the situation a bit. Can you confirm what you have?

Vader,
In '87, you either got a carbed LG4 or TPI LB9 if 305. LO3 TBI was '88.

Man vader, your slipping... thats the second time i've seen you get corrected this week. whats wrong?

Anyway, like the other guy said, you vacuum hoses are pretty easy, just slide the old ones off, and put the new ones on.

Heres a pic of the idle adjust screw in case you couldn't find it before:

and heres a pic of the kind of hoses your looking for and some of there general locations. There pretty easy to spot once you know what your looking for:

Hope this helps you out

Eric

EDIT: MAN!! i thought i sized those pics down! sorry about that. If you have 56K, well... I'm REALLY sorry....

Thanks guys...Those pictures and information has helped a ton. I hope to get to my grandmothers soon, where the car is sitting in the garage, and take a look at it.

Vader: The other guy was correct...In 87 you had the option of a carbed motor or a TPI.

Another question: Anybody know where i can find specs on the engine i have? I know its a 305 V8, stock, but rebuilt.

That should tell you a great deal about your engine, along with the car in general.
