How to find a vacuum leak

I have had some driveability problems lately. Someone told me "oh you must have a vacuum leak"...

Whats the best way to chek this. I DO have a hand-vacuum pump with gauge. Honestly, I don't really know how to utilize it to its fullest capacity.

I have tried hooking it up to various parts of the vaccum lines. Every time I try to draw a vacuum, it wont hold steady (the vaccum is lost). I just dont know if thats normal.

Please explain how I am *supposed* to be using this tool.

Joe

a vacuum gauge will not find a leak. It is for testing devices that use engine vacuum.
Get a can of B12 chemtool and spray it around the carb and intake with the motor running. When the engine changes rpm as the spray hits' it, you can identify the general area.

Will ignition fluid (spray can) work as well?
