Why is Wife's Grand Am as fast as my GTA?
I just got done removing my A.I.R. pump and related junk and also did the throttle body by pass mod. I took her out to see how she ran and to see what it would run on my new G-Tech and I am pretty depressed as it ran the 1/4 with almost exactly the same time and speed as my Wife's 02 V6 Grand Am.
I ran the car 3 times and here is what I got (on a VERY secluded tar road in the country) 1st run 16.18 @ 92.8, spun real bad at the start. 2nd run 16.28 @ 90.4, very little spin, and the last run was a 16.11 @ 86.7 mph with no spin at all. Yesterday I ran the Grand Am in the exact same place and it was very consistant in the 16.1 @ 89-90 mph range. The last time I had the car to the track was about 3 years ago and it ran 14.5's @ 90-91 mph right off of the highway with no cooldown. Last year we ran the two against each other when I got it out of storage and I pulled her so bad I almost let off just to make her feel good.
The only thing I think it could be the cause is the tranny, last year the o-ring on the filter was torn and the tranny would slip when going around corners fast, I fixed the o-ring and the car still feels like it pulls good but it won't chirp the tires lightly when going into 2nd like it used too. Could the transmission be the cause of the lost time or is the G-tech most likely the suspect? I think it looks like it might be time to install the new transmission I have waiting in the garage
Opinions?

Why you ask? Because it is.
Power to weight ratio is in favor of the GA also being FWD on a poorly paved road with the extra weight on the tires that are doing all the work helps quite a bit.

The road I was on was paved last year and is very flat and smooth. The wife's car is a four door and if I remember correctly they pretty close to the same. I was really susprised when the tires spun on the first run as the car always hooks up really good, the back end just drops and the car is gone. The car has always left the line good and is it's strongest suit, the last third of the 1/4 seems to take forever though.
I beleive that the rear gears in the GTA have been changed to a lower ratio as the speedo reads 76 mph and the car is actually going 65 mph. The car can also pull past redline in fourth and the speedo was reading 172mph which I know is not possible. I know are cars are not sussposed to go into 4th at full throttle but mine seems to with no problem.
Just for kicks I just took my 93 Toyota Celica with it's mighty 2.2L out to see what it would run and I was rewarded with a 17.49 @ 80 mph and a 17.54 @ 81mph, Not very exciting but hey it get almost 40 mpg
BTW, I replaced the TPS last fall before I put the car in storage and followed the instructions I found on this site, it seems snappy enough but might that have something to do with my lost speed?
Best regards,
Tanaman.

Well I adjusted the tv cable and ignition timing and ran the car again and was rewarded with a best of 14.5 @ 95 mph. the timing was a 12 degrees btdc and I set it at 8 degrees btdc.
I know that the G-Tech is not as accurate as a run at the track but it's got to be close
.
later.

I was about to say, it sounds like your trans is slipping, especially with each pass getting consecutively lower traps.

sounds much better
my best run on the rx7 with it's wimpy 146hp was pulling those times so you must of had something wrong there with your timing
glad things are looking a little better though
and yeah the g-tech isn't the most accurate but it is much better then the butt dyno and as far as the ET goes it seems to be just about on avg with the times I was pulling at the track so I can't complain too much
but it also depends on other things like incline and another big factor that can make your times all screwed up is how much the car squats when it takes off.
lots of squat means really fast time on the old fasion g-tech meters

Yeah, the butt on my car really squats of take off and if the tires do spin it is it is hardly ever for more than a couple of feet, which really suprised me when I burned them really bad on the 1st run (20ft+). I just had some new Yokohama AVS ES100's put on the rear so maybe they still had a little shipping glaze on them. I really like the tires so far but I haven't driven that far yet.
I was suprised that my mph was as high as it was because the last time I was at the track I could never get more than 90.5 mph out of it. The next time I can get to BIR when they have wendsday night street drags I'll see what their timers say I run and compare them to the G-tech.

the mph is always going to be faster on the gtech cause they read it as what your TRUE mph should be while at the track they take the avg mph for the last little ways
