91 RS Redlines at highway speeds
Hi:
This is my first post.
I have a 91 RS with the carbed 305. For some reason the engine almost redlines (yellow area on the tach) at normal highway speeds (70-85mph) with or without the a/c on. It idles smoothly no misfiring or anything
Is my tach malfuntioning or is there something wrong with my engine?
Any advice is appreciated,
Camaerohead

Does it sound like it's revving really high? My '89 Grand Prix had a funky tach, it read double what it was supposed to. That or I was red-lining it daily and it idled cold at two grand...
I'd bet your tach or sending unit is the culprit, if it doesn't sound like it's revving to the moon. Not that I'd know how to diagnose that problem, if that really was the case.

Yeah you'll definitely know it if it's redlining. Either by ear, or by the fact that you're EATING through gas and the temp gauge goes abnormally high. Lol and if you actually ARE.....how's the tranny perform? Can you get into 4th gear, or are you stuck in third, or second? Does it feel like it slips? Aka, sluggish shifting and performance....leaving from a light it feels like letting a clutch out, instead of immediate movement....
Nope tranny shifts like it's brand new (it's automatic). Even when it's in the red and I want to pass someone it does it with ease.
It doesn't sound like it's revving too high when I'm driving it but I have t-tops so past 70mph pretty much all I can hear is wind noise anyway.
It idles at about 2000-3000 when cold and just under 2000 when it warms up. But she purrs like there's nothing wrong.
I'm guessing it's the gauge.
Thank goodness. I thought my get-up-and-go had
got-up-and-went.

Ya I agree if it was idle at 2-3000 it would be screaming and hard to put into gear without a hard jerk. You would not need to hit the gas to accelerate from a stop, and almost riding the brakes though city traffic.

The tachs in these cars are notorious for reading high when they start to fail. Go buy a $10 tach from ______ parts store and hook it up and see what it reads. I bet it reads a much more reasonable RPM than your factory tach.
