U-Joint failure, engine damage?
I had a U-joint crack in half. It started as a bad vibration under load, then vibrated all the time then as I was limping home bam! It did vibrate bad enough to loosen all the header bolts. Now the headers are fixed I'm geting a tick under load from the engine. It wont tick reving the engine or tick long enough to isolate. It sounds like a lifter noise so it proably is but.
Could the vibration have caused internal damage?
Oh and DS loops do work even on daily drivers.

I don't see how it could cause internal engine problems... did you check your header collector bolts? You could have an exhaust leak there too. If the header bolts loosened off from the vibration, the collector bolts possibly could have too.
doesn't seem unreasonable that it could beat on a bearing if it was bad enough to loosen the header bolts, especially if you're running a manual trans. i think i'd look at everything else first and try to eliminate that as the source before i jumped into the engine.

like Five7's saying (I think?) ... if it was bad enough to back the header bolts out a little, then it probably blew the header gasket while the bolts were loosened.
Try taking them out and inspecting them.

It is actually a manual transmission.
I put a few more miles on it then drained the oil, looked clean, cut the filter open dident find any metal. Did find ASH deposits in the bottem of the filter which dident make me too happy but at least it was traped in the filter.
I took the passenger side header gasket off (Percey) found a few spots where the gasket was cracked, slaped a cheap set of Mr gaskets on and the noise is no more. I should have checked the header gaskets better but these aluminum gaskets are supposed to be nearly indestructible and I ran my stethoscope all around them dident hear any leaks.
