305 or 350??

I have a 305 already and I would love to do it up instead of a 350. Just how much lost in making power would there be and could I get any real power out of a 305?

The best I have ever seen a 305 able to do is hang even with LT1 fourth-gens. I know a guy with a 91 Z28 305TPI 5-speed with almost every mod imaginable. SFC's, ported and polished heads, intake, and runners, k&n filter, underdrive pulleys, 3.55 gears, lakewood LCA's and panhard rod, everything. And he can hang dead even with an LT1 4th gen. I think I would rather have a 350...

350 is the way to go. you can get so much more horsepower out of a 350 than a 305. Hell, why not just get a 502

Unless your going to get a supercharger or turbo for the 305, I would go with a 350. There is a guy on these boards I believe running low 13s with a 305. But definately go with a 350.

How "original" do you mean?

If externally visually original, you're very limited - cam, porting heads & intake.

If you're willing to go beyond that, like replace the heads & exhaust, then take a look at my sig for the work-in-progress. You might want a different cam (like a computer-compatible type), but you'll be getting good power. Being able to hang with LT1 4th-gens is nothing to sneeze at.

It still would have less power than a 350, though. A 350 could even look original externally.

all small blocks look the same on the outside. it's the bore size and stroke that are different.a 350 will look just the same externally as a 305.

TPI 305, ya a 350 would do better hands down, but carbed up 305, well. I know of one person (1 is good enough for me) that runs 550 horse out of a 305 (granted he runs 4 down draft webbers), but you can still get 300hp out of a 305 and it most cases if done right 350 which is enough to take an LT1 no problem (as most of the 3rd gens are lighter).

But any and I mean ANY 350 that has even a few mods to crack it over the 300hp hump will smoke a 305.

But all said and done, my next car will be a 305 and 5 speed or go back to good old days of Z28 and 302!!!
