need help with a starter ASAP

ok well the camaro is in the shop and they say that the starter is going. The car hasn't started the first time on 3 occasions. They quoted $330 bux to replace the starter. I find that hard to believe. Is this a fair price and does anyone know of a good aftermarket starter and how hard is it to replace on my own

There are two 9/16 bolts that mount the starter as well as one tiny brace bolt. There are also two wire leads that need to come off as well. You can have one out in a matter of minutes once the car is in the air.

Some people have problems with it hitting the exhaust manifold. I've changed a few starters, took about 30-60 minutes depending on how fast I got all the tools together and out next to the car. Definitely DIY if you can, starters are $40.

I recently paid $80 for my starter. Like said in previous post it isn't that hard to change. One important thing left out though was DISCONECT the battery. Will prevent some possible nasty sparks maybe even a fire.
Things that are good to have for the job...Small hydo-jack(Jack car up with) $20-30 & Jackstands(to safely surport car) $20-25

Oh yeah Chilton or Hanyes manual $20-$30 is a good investment. Lots of good info on all aspects of your car.

If you are not wanting to get your hands dirty I would definently shop around. Call you local parts stores for starter prices. then when you find out how much you are looking at paying. ask the same shop how much they charge for the labor if you surply the starter. Chances are you will get a better warrenty for the starter that way.

Goodluck and hope all works out well.

If you bring your own parts the shop usually charges more for labor. Atleast the less than honest ones.

It's a one hour job in your driveway. Jack up front end, disconnect battery, remove wires going to starter solenoid, remove starter front brace, two rear bolts. Realize it's a pain in the *** to get out then remove the solenoid and the starter falls right out and installion is the opposite.

I like to do a starter draw test with a VAT40 if I think one is going, that usually helps out a bit.

You can definitly do it, but it can be a real pain if the exhaust gets in the way. It sounds like Joez88Camaro and I had very similar experiences. If you can't get it to come out, try removing the solenoid and then removing the starter motor. If you don't mind remanufactured parts, you can get a starter (with solenoid) at Autozone for around $35-40 with a lifetime warrenty.
