carbed 86 Z please tell me about the code 24 vec speed sensor.

I keep getting this code and I changed the sensor behind the speedo, I swapped out the auto chip for the 5 spped chip and I am still getting this code.

BZ,

Are you getting pulses from the VSS? You should get about 2,002 pulses per mile in final drive. The pulses should be a square wave DC at a varying P-P voltage and frequency, but should be at about a 30-50% duty cycle.

BZ,

The VSS is supposed to report vehicle speed to the ECM. About the only things it would be used for on your engine would be the SHIFT light, electric fan cut-off.

When the ECM has a tachometer input and no clutch safety switch with some VSS inpit, it calculates the vehicle speed and engine speed to determine what gear you are in. At a given RPM and TPS input, the ECM will turn on the SHIFT light. At 40MPH (or so) the ECM will shut off the electric cooling fan(s). At 118 MPH (or so) the ECM will cut off fuel on an EFI engine, not on your carbed engine.

You may have some VSS pulses occurring when the vehicle is not in motion, confusing the ECM when it expects a certain ratio of RPM and VSS pulses. About he only way you could be generating pulses when standing still is with a stray voltage, bad ground, or intermittent connection causing the ECM to interpret the voltage change as a VSS pulse.

Unless you have a stray signal or your PROM is poorly programmed, you should never get a VSS DTC when the car has just been started and hasn't been moved. That's a baffler.
