305 crnk bolt?

Does anyone know the specs on the crank bolt for an 85 305 motor? I bought one but it has a fine thread and does not fit, an old head bolt I have worked better, but still was not correct. I'm thinking i might have to tap the hole, or at least chase the threads, but I dont want to use the wrong one.

if an old head bolt worked better the threads are screwed up. all SBC crank bolts are 7/16-20

Did you take the flywheel off with a puller?

Sometimes the puller can damage the first few threads on the crank.

Take your old crank bolt and file the first few threads down to taper the end. Then gently start it in the crank. If it goes in ok turn it a few times and that should fix the threads.

If it doesn't chase it with your tap slowly to be sure you are engaging the original threads.
