305 Performance

What are the best things to do to a stock 305 ci V8 L03 engine with stock tranny in a '91 Camaro RS with out replacing either? I have read all the tech artivles and all that stuff, and was hoping for some community input.

In this order: exhaust from the heads to the street; cam; "real" (not stamped sheet metal) rocker arme; and heads.

Get a set of application-specific headers such as Edelbrock TES, SLP, or Dynomax, that come with a Y-pipe; and a new cat; and a cat-back exhaust. DO NOT get the ones for the L03, because if you do, they will all contain the same restriction you now have. Get the ones for a TPI 350.

A decent cam would be something around 210°/220° to 215°/225° at .050" lift, something like a Comp 264HR. Stay under .500" total lift. For rocker arms, a good "bang for the buck" is the Comp steel roller-tip ball-fulcrum units.

For the cat-back system, you would be looking at about $250 or so, depending on who you get it from, or a little over $500 for the awesome Borla kit. Go stroll over to www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com and look at some of the exhaust crap over there, and you can get an estimate of how much it will cost. Some of the costs will vary widely, depending on the name brand that you get. But please get the kit for the 350 engine, not the 305!

Actually, you may just want to drop a 350 in there to begin with. But it's really up to you, and how much time and money you are willing to put into this and how much hp and torque you want in return. I'd get the 350 though

Take a look at some of what I did. I made sure everything I bought would bolt right on to a 350 for when I feel the need. Thats why I haven't bought heads or a cam. Everything else will carry over except for the hypertech chip and maybe something else in my sig.

World S/R Torquer 305 heads, about $650 assembled, but they really benefit from minor porting in the bowl area. Don't use 350 heads, they have larger chambers that will kill your compression.

A roller cam will run you about $175-250. The "real" rockers RB talks about, ~$300. Headers, from about $325 to $450, depending upon what you get. High-flow cat, somewhere between $70 and $140.

After all that, you'll probably benefit from a larger throttle body and injectors, and PROM work.

Except for the heads, aftermarket parts made for a 350 will fit your engine.

Do remember that after you replace the cam or the heads you will have to get a new PROM, that MAP run system will fall on its face with those kind of mods.
