Loud Clicking Sound Upon Acceleration

Hey. My 1988 WS6 makes a horrendous clicking sound when I'm accelerating. It doesn't do it with the typical engine rev in park, neutral, or whatever, but only when I'm under light or heavy acceleration. Its a 305TPI with 40k miles on the drivetrain, and Posi Rear. Any ideas? It seems to be coming from the rear, but I resealed the gasket and filled differential fluid. Thanks!

Yeah I dunno man, I have been having almost the same thing, I hear it from the rear or atleast I think it is, and then I think twice and maybe its up front....

I doubt its an engine ticking, I am prolly going to have to check out my rear, I always thought it was my engine mounts that could be ticking but thats not it for sure...

I'd also like to know what it may be...an old screw perhaps? Sometimes its the simple things.

Also, BTW, the car has been sitting for 5 years with a few times being driven around. I just greased all the fittings today cuz it was bone dry, but still there is a click. If all else fails, I'll record a video of it.

Yes, it will most likely be something really small.

Probably a stupid question here:

Is it an exhaust leak? Typically exhaust leaks will be really quiet w/o load, and pronounced when under heavier load (e.g. accelerating)

I had an exhaust like on my Camaro that sounds nearly identicle to that of a valve ticking or something.

Just something to keep in mind.

Once you start feeding some torque through the driveline, that can (and does) make the exhaust joints open up if they're not tight enough.

Mark.

It shouldn't be... the exhaust is fairly new and the hi-flow convertor still has the new cat smell to hit. Some people I asked said it could be the driveshaft, so ill put it on a lift and check it out. Thanks for the heads up, I will definately check the exhaust out to make sure.

since it's recently added exhaust, just make sure that everything is tight, and if you had anything welded that none of them are weak welds.

Re: Loud Clicking Sound Upon Acceleration

Hate to stir up a really old thread but am having an identical issue and was wondering if there were any answers to this. I just purchased the car and it had been sitting for a year without running went through did all the typical fluid changes tune up and everything exhaust seems tight but there is a slight leak but don't think that's what causeing it.

Ticking coming from engine? Only during acceleration? All the time? Few more details please.

Yes it's only under acceleration does not do it at idle or if I rev the engine when in park or neutral. Sounds like it's coming from the engine

Make sure your 02 sensor hasn't broken out.

Yeah, I would suspect an exhaust leak. Might be visible in the dark..... maybe....
