Money that is, and i'm talking in a small block. All parts and lobor. without a power adder too.

Prices for labor vary from place to place, so a best estimate would be received from a garage.
You might also want to ask what it would cost for a new tranny & rear end too.

LBC,
400 BHP is very easy with 350 inches and decent compression and flow. RWHP is a different story, and you'll have an engine that might not be a good year 'round daily driver. You'd have to push 450+ HP on 350 cubes (which isn't that difficult) to make 400 at the wheels. That engine would not be friendly to low octane camel-urine fuels, nor would it be a good short trip grocery-getter.
If I wanted 400+ in a daily driver, I'd be thinking a 502 with EFI. That Ramjet 502 would be a nice package but a tight squeeze. I could use 510 ft/lb at times, with the 500+ HP that goes with it - all on pump gas. The $8,000.00 price tag is a bit steep, though.

In one of the last two or three Chevy Hi Performance mags they did a beautiful 400+hp 350 buildup. It wasn't really expensive, either, as these things go.
It was the issue with the orange 87 Camaro on the cover.

Sure, if you don't count the extensivly ported L98 aluminum heads they used. The magazine article is not a real world buildup. There's lots of things they didn't mention on how they got so much HP.

You also have to take flywheel hp ratings with a grain of salt. Multiply their numbers by 80% and that's what you see at the rear wheels. 320 hp still wouldn't be bad, except for the fact that a lot of times they don't run accessories, they have an infinite supply of room temperature coolant, and they are breathig in room temperature air, and they often don't run though exhaust.

Stephen,
No, you are looking at the wrong article in Chevy Hi Performance.
The one I'm talking about is in the October issue and used cast iron Vortec heads, a 350 roller cam block, the GM "Hot" cam and a 4bbl carb.
They claim they paid $2400 US to do it.

I'm pulling around 360 (give or take) outta my 350 and thats with my old stock 305 heads on it and I'm under 3 G's so far.

How can you make that estimate? Out of a pair of stock 305 cylinder heads? Do you have any dyno numbers or dragstrip MPH's to back up your claim? I've got about 300 with a new 350 and Dart 180's. Don't go throwing around big numbers if you can't back it up.

Well, I'd think at least a couple of thousand, depending on how much labor work you do yourself, and how much you pay your helpers (like your tool-girl
) I'd definitely take that 305 out and at least pop in a 350, if your girlfriend won't mind.
