not exhaust--any one take off the metal cover on the back of the hood scoop?

This is kind of long, but read the whole thing. I took off the cover from the back of my hood scoop a few weeks ago. However, I noticed that after a little while, the insulation on the underside of my hood (secured on the sides, not in the middle) was getting all ruffled up. I put the cover back on and after only a couple hours of driving, the computer had reprogrammed itself for the increase in air (or the cooler air, I don't know). The car idled at about 300rpm and died a couple times. After more driving, it was just like before I messed with it, so I know it was the computer reprogramming.

I want to take it off for good. I could secure the hood insulation. Did GM mean for it to be taken off--it's so easy to remove and there is no insulation on the underside of the scoop? Will I have any problem with stuff getting in my engine compartment. I guess it is really similar to cowl induction in that the back is open. If I take it off for good I can't put it back on without engine consequences for a while. Any problems leaving it off for good?

Oh yeah, I am about to put on a K&N cone air filter--TPI section in jeg's. I don't know if this would have any bearing on my question or not.

Your distributor and all your electrical stuff is right abck there, if you took off the cover where the vents get their air from, you'll have problems with your electrical system getting wet, and yes you will have problems with stuff getting in your engine.

Your best bat would be to simply build a cold air system for your car with a KNN conical...

My Formula doesn't have that peice on the scoop and it runs fine all the time. In fact, I can see the heat pouring out of it after a long drive and I think its one of the reasons my car runs so cool. I also have the K@N cone filter but that shouldn't have anything to do with it. I'm not sure why you're having problems because mine runs great all the time. And as far as getting electrical stuff wet, I work for a detailer and we blast that stuff all the time with a high pressure gun and rarely if ever have problems. Sorry I can't help with getting yours to run better, but it can be left off without problems.

Well, like I said, it was back to normal after a few hours of driving with the piece back on. The car runs absolutely perfect. It out to: it has 19,500 ACTUAL miles. I got it a few months ago from a guy that had been storing it in his garage.
I just wanted to know if I could leave it off because when I put it back one, the car idled low and lacked some power for a little while.

I don't have a piece there and my car didn't come with the ram air unit that was on T/A's of my car's year... I don't have a Formula, but pre '85 power bulges are nearly identical... I have no problem with things getting wet, only once when water triggered a vacuum leak. But I can leave it in pouring rain, hop in and it runs perfect.

Mine cam with early 80s cold air stuff. Screen on the hood insted of plate. It had some big plastic deal to it too but I took it off and kept the rain gutter under the opening.

If its not exhaust, why did you post it in the exhaust forum? Moving to General Tech...
