Ok, my car is making a rattly rubbing sound from the front of the engine. I first thought it was the A/C compressor, but I replaced it and it wasn't. So, I took it to AutoZone to check pulley prices. The guy there listened to it and said it may be the timing chain. Does that make sense?

Uh, oh. That sux. I'll have to get the fixed. How hard was it to fix? Or should I take it to a mechanic? Did yours stop after about 1000-1200 RPM?
Dude, in TN, too? Kool.

Try getting in there with an automotive stethescope and see if you can pin point the sound (be very careful of all the moving parts). If you do not have an actual automotive stethescope, a couple feet of heater hose works well.

Not to hard to fix, just take the balancer off, and take timing cover off its its bad enough, but i went ahead and put a cam and stuffin while i had tore down, because it thought it was my timing chain. And yes mine did stop around 1500 or so.

Ok. I think my dad has a stethoscope, so I'll see. I'll take the belt off to be sure, I think that everything that turns up there rattles... except the crankshaft. I'll get back to you with news when I do it. Should I replace the timing chain even if it is just the balance to avoid having to redo it in the future?

I put in a new cam and everything when i did, just because i thought it was the timing chain, then found out it was the balancer, and figured i might as well change the stuff out anyway, while it was tore down that far.

I probably won't do the cam, because I plan to change the whole engine eventually, but the timing chain and gears I will probably do. Unless there is a relativley unexpensive cam that doesn't require reprogramming the EPROM....
