SERIOUS Problem

Hey everybody,
I'll try to make this short-but precise, so here goes. The college I go to is 207 mi. away from my home. So when I go home for the weekend it's 3 hrs. of hard work for my '92 RS....anyway, last year I'm drivin along on my way back to school-and I come up to some road work. It's slow goin for a while and then it finally clears up. Well, I'm chillin in first-no probs-shift into second....no prob-hit about 2500 RPM's, and I get thrown into my steering wheel...Like I hit a brick wall. It's goin, it's stoppin- it can' make up it's mind-somehow I get enough RPM's to get it into third-same thing REAL jerky feelin and like I'm drivin on gravel-sounds like it too-there was also a real loud poppin sound comin from behind me too....needless to say I pull over and get towed back home....shop says they fixed it-changed the coil and plugs and whatnot. Well-haven't had any problems since they "fixed" it.....until this weekend. Same scenario-same exact thing happened....what is up?!?!?! Get it towed home-sits over night-gonna drive to my buddy's garage in 1st gear. Drive it all the way there, not a thing wrong...what is up?!?!? Buddy thinks it may be fuel pump/filter-I obviously don't have a clue. Anybody else experience anything like this??? Help is definitely appreciated.

what happens to the tach when it wants to die or slow down.

if the tach drops to zero then you have an ignition short somewhere and the motor gets no spark when it shorts.

if it was fuel pump related the slow down speed up would be more gradual as the engine lost fuel pressure and you likely wouldent have it (the pump) come back to life after such a serious foul up.

bottom line -- need more info about what gauges do and car sounds like when it happens.

well, as far as sounds go, it was pretty much like I described everything got real loud-felt like I was drivin on 4 flat tires. My tach didn't really do much-it didn't really drop-kept most of the RPM's up-that's what was really odd-it never really "died" on me.....I don't know-that help any?

check your rear end fluid. Or maybe your rear end is going out.

Your injectors... pull the plenum and check the resistance on them with a DMM, shouldn't be more than 12 ohms... thats what it sounds like to me.

Well, I changed my fuel filter this weekend, and drove it back down to school. It was 1000% better. It hasn't driven that well since I've had the car. I really noticed when I got into the higher RPM's. Drove great. I'm gonna hope that was the problem and pray that it was nothin you guys said -even though those are all probably screwed up too. I'm sure I'll write again if somethin happens. Thanks for the help.

this is a really difficult problem to figure out without having driven it, but did it quite possibly feel as if the tcc came on and stuck?

my tpi corvette did exactly what you are describing, bucking and the popping noise from behind you. i too changed the coil, plugs, and wires and thought it was fixed. the problem came back two weeks later and went away again after it sat for a while. it started getting worse and worse, turned out to be the fuel pump was going south. changed the pump and its been problem free for about 8 months now.

Yeah, I didn't think it was the fuel pump because I could hear it prime before I started the engine-never got weird soundin or anything-always sounded "normal" (whatever that means ) but like I said before-it's runnin wonderful. I got it up to 105 with ease. I could never get it close to that cause it would shake too bad. I think the filter definitely did need to be changed-but I'll keep an ear on my fuel pump.

...every 30,000 miles at most, just like the service schedule reads.
