2nd maybe even 3rd opinions on my oil leak?
Alright well my oil leak is getting worse and its about time i do something about it...
Last 3000 miles it lost 1/2 quart...few drops every night
Now its lost over 1/4 of a quart in less then 800 miles...and almost everytime i drive the car i smell burning oil which is burning on my Y pipe...
Ive asked a few board members...there is no oil on the flexplate or torque converter which leads me to beilive its not the Main Seal?
It doesnt look to be right there but from up above the tranny...
I took a few pictures so you guys can see a little better...
Valve covers are clean...so i guess my last option is the intake manifold? Thats what another member suggested to me.
From the top i can see some wet spots down below the passenger side header...
Its too hard to see exactly where its coming from...i took off the plastic distributor cover and its greasy back there doesnt look all that wet though.
Underneath it looks like its coming from above the starter and leaking off the brake lines...
The car leaks like 3 drops everytime i turn it off then its slowly after that...its got me worried now...After long trips u can see smoke from it burning on the exhaust pipe.
If it is the intake manifold how much work we talking here? I drive the car everyday to work so i need it monday-friday...
On a side not I replaced the PCV valves...and it leaks on the driver side...did i forget to do something?

mine looks the same, but mine is leaking from the back of the valve covers. removing the intake manifold isnt too hard and can easily done in a day if you dont strip and of the torx bolts, although i did have a heck of a time getting at some of the bottom runner torx bolts.

Adding some UV dye to the oil next time you change it would help pinpoint the source of the leak.
Judging from the amount on the rear of the oil pan, it could be the rear main seal, it could also very well be the rear part of the oil pan gasket is shotty.
I know you said the flexplate looks clean, but what about the engine side of it?

Behind the flexplate towards the engine is not wet...all up in there between it does not appear to have any oil on it...
I treid to run a rag back there but i couldnt get to anything other then what i could see...
I do see some fresh oil right behind the passenger side header....like right of the distributor but down some...What could be back there...
This is really a pain i need to find this oil leak, id like to not have to take half the engine apart to find it either...
anymore suggestions guys? anyone have or had an oil leak like mine in the past?
Would you guys suggest cleaning it all down with brake clean and what not and just watch it run for awhile? I kinda tried that a few months ago...
I mean its really hard to pin point it

I'd run my finger around the valve cover bottom and see if theres any oil. Thats where I had a leak and I had similar oil drips.

I'm going to laugh if I'm right, and we both made the same mistake...
But where is your dipstick located? Right above the starter, correct? Now answer me this... Is the dipstick tube inserted into the hole correctly?

alright under the valve cover not wet at all....
and dip stick ive never messed with and its not leaking...
Im gonna go once again jack up the car put it on stands spray the **** outta it with brake clean and watch it run...Ill tell you guys how it goes...i dont know if theres really anymore to tell.
After all this i guess im pulling off the upper intake manifold and the runners...not much else left to do.
Im curious to what a shop would being do if i brought the car to them...which i really dont wanna do.

Judging by where the oil is dripping from it is either coming from the valve cover, back side of the intake, distributor seal, or the oil pan.
The most likely is the intake. They are notorious for leaking back there. With the age and mileage on your car, I'd be willing to put money on it.
If you take your time I'd plan on 6hrs start to finish. Just beware you will need to verify/set the timing since the distributor has to come out. However if your going to do it yourself... its a good time to port the intake
Although you could spend the $15 and do the valve cover gaskets. It definately wouldnt hurt especially if they are original.

I have been doing alot of reading because I have a very similar oil leak. The engine has 2600 miles on the rebuild and is a 1971 350 block. Here is the question I have before I start checking and tearing everything apart, should the oil dip stick tube move around freely or should it be tight. Lat time I checked the oil the tube seemed really loose.

Have you looked inside the dizzy cap? See if there's oil there - might be the dizzy leaking on inside instead of outside - mine did that. I'm betting dizzy, or intake mani.
I've done my intake mani gaskets 3 times, and mine still leaks. Everyone has different method, some say use the rubber on the china walls, some say don't. Some say use RTV with the rubber, some say only RTV, some say only rubber. Some say let the RTV dry for an hour, some say seal it wet, some say let RTV dry for 4 or more hours. I'll just keep doing mine until it seals I guess lol.

Well that is a great possibility,
I have been doing alot of reading and running out and checking. I put my hand on the block between the distributor and firewall and there sure as chit was oil back there. Now if it was a rear main seal I am guessing the oil couldn't possibly travel that high could it?
