427 SBC Build Up---the other end

A couple of weeks ago I had posted a thread about a 327 build up. I am still up in the air over what to build, which is just fine since I (hopefully) won't have to replace my engine for a long time to come.

From what I know there are 2 ways to make a small block 427. One is with the a 400 block and a 4 inch stroke. The other is ridiculously expensive...the components alone were like $5,000!!!

So I would like to know if anybody has any "real" experience building or driving and maintaining a 427 small block.

In another words, parts used, application (street or strip), reliability and so on.

Thank you again.

A 4-1/8" (+0.060") bore and 3-7/8" stroker crank (+0.125") will make a 426 CI displacement in a 400 SBC. You'll get uncomfortably close to the lower cylinder walls with much more stroke than that, and camshaft lobe clearance should be watched closely as well.

If you get a case with a taller deck and longer rods, you can go even more, but it will cost you ($$$).

really anything more then the 3.75 stock stroke on the 400 isnt really needed. its allready a pretty long stroke and still can spin a bit, stroking it out that much will really limit r's, it would make a great tracker pull or something that need alot ot torque, also all the money you would spend on the crank, rods, pistons, it would be better to jsut get a big block or build the 400 with the stock crank

Vader,

The block with the higher deck is a lot of DOUGH!!!$$$ OUCH. The kit is about 5 grand or so. No thank you. However, a 426 is close enough to call it a 427...doesn't really matter. So you are saying that a 3 7/8" stroker crank and a .060 over will work. I'd be safe to run the engine?

I may just end up going with a 383 after it is all said and done, but want to explore my options.

As far as a big block goes, I've looked into it and it's not very practical for my application. Too much trouble. I'd prefer to use a big block in a different car.

a.060 overbore on a 400 is asking for trouble.from what you listed as your primary use of the motor go with a 406 it'll live comfortably on the street and will perform on the track.if you just want something to be different that's a personal choice.i like that method but it isn't practical.i would find a select 400 core and throw in a forged 3.27 crank.that would be real fun.you think rotaries spin high let that baby rip.i see it now with the right selection of components(solid roller, forged aluminum rods,sb2 heads).hp peak would be at 8300 rpm's.wishful thinking............

I'd just go with a 400...

What kind of stroker kits can you buy for these?

The only way to do .060" over on a 400 block is to use a bowtie block. Trying to get that much displacement out of a production block is spending a lot of money on an engine that isn't going to last.

If you want big cubic inches then either buy aftermarket parts or build a big block. It'll be cheaper to build a mild BBC than a complete aftermarket big inch SBC.

Heads alone to feed a big inch SBC will cost more and not flow as much as some ported factory BBC heads.
