Engine troubles... need help ASAP.
OK, got the 87 Iroc out of the shop (full brake system overhaul). Now the problem stirs from the engine not being able to push the car past 25 mph, it's idleing rougher then before, sometimes backfires when starting, and ther's a hose running from the intake manifold (between the carb and distributor) to absolutley nowhere. What the hell is going on?
Those ****s at the shop better not have ****ed with it, cuz they did mention that the car could use a tune up. Oh, and the choke looks like it's stuck (choke light on).
P.S. I'll running back and forth between the car and the computer, so if anything...... fldeathbass on AIM. All help will be greatly appreciated.

On the back side of the carb their is a vaccume port, usually used for brake booster but could be used for something else.
I would imagine with the brake system change they either forgot to hook up the line or eliminated the booster all together.
Do the brakes function well (not that you can really tell at 25mph..) or is the pedal really stiff and you barely slow down?

Just got back from the test drive about 20 mins ago, still won't go above 25 mph, stalled out on me when it came to a complete stop, when I finnaly got it back in the driveway and shut her down, engine dieseled for about 5-10 seconds.
Already checked the distibutor conections and plug wires, looked good, the #6 plug on the distributor was a little loose, so pushed it down further and the idle improved (not as lopey). Brakes are ok, I did notice that when the car is running and I put my thumb to plug the (vacum?) hose, the engine speed decreases and the car stalls out and dies.
1987 Iroc, 305 carburated, Front disc, rear drums.

Not too sure on that, the major thing I do know is that the air filter/carb cover is non-factory.
I'll try to take some pics, and post them up, it'll be a lot easier to see that to explain.

possible to post a pic of the mystery vacuum hose? Sounds like you have a horrible miss or the timing is off. I would check the connections on the plugs and your timing also. If comp controlled you have to unplug the 4-pin connector on the dist.

take it back to the shop and tell them that after the car came back from a brake job it was NOT acting right. The only thing I can think of is they didnt hook up the brake booster correctly, or maybe spilled some brake fluid in your distributor, which could have killed the coil.

pic #1, block off the hose for now. sooner or later you will figure out where it goes
pic#2, looks like emissions crap for the smog pump and diverter valve, don't worry about it b/c it looks like it has been recycled
did you double check the timing yet?

Hook the hose up to the brake booster again. That is where it's supposed to go. Then find out where that extra vacuum line is that used to be from the brake booster.
See where you're at after that.

The first pic, that hose should go to a vacuum sensor that is attached to the firewall on the passenger site. That’s where it goes on my car.
To agree with the other post I would call the person who last touched it. They probably used the distributor as an hand rest and turned it or something stupid like that.

Replaced the distributor rotor and cap, new wires and spark plugs, runs ok right now, still back fires a little bit, I did block off the mystery hose on the intake. The timing was set as best it could without a timing light, one thing I did notice is that the old plugs were black meaning the car was/is running rich, probably contributed by the choke being stuck on the carb. So now the focus moves to either the fuel system or a vacum leak somwhere.

Beg, borrow, or acquire one by other means and set it correctly. It will be hard fix other problems when your timing is off.

Alright, done and done. found a different shop to set the timing tomorrow, double checked everything again, and just to brush everything else to the side, the #7 and #2 plug wires were crossed.

Your "mystery" hose runs to a tee connector behind the brake booster. It provides vacuum to your hvac vents and runs to the vacuum reservoir up front on the driver's side. It is not the line for the manifold vac sensor. That is a hard plastic line (smaller) also connected to the rear of the carb just to the passenger side of center.
