it's putting in a bigger crank then the engine came with.. like a 400 crank inside a 350 givies you a 377 and u bored it .030 over so you get the 383 stroker.. (most popular and well known stroker) u stroke an engine so you can get more cubs out of it w/o changing the block to something else (and above 350.. well.. nothing in between that and a 400 sb).. neways.. more cubs is equal to more power and so forth.

The rod journals on the crank are farther from the center, giving the pistons a longer throw or "stroke". Since the piston moves farther up and down, it displaces more air than with the old crank. Just in case you were wondering about the semi-technical reason.

305 and 350 cranks are the same (usually casting # 442) with the same stroke (3.48"). You can't stroke a 305 by putting a 350 crank in it; if you put a 350 crank in a 305 block, you come out with {expectant drum roll please} a 305.
For both a 305 and a 350, a "stroker kit" consists of a 400 crank with its mains turned down to the 305/350 size; and either a set of standard 400 5.565" rods and standard 305 or 350 pistons, or standard 305/350 5.7" rods and special pistons.
IMHO it makes no sense whatsoever to do this to a 305. Even if you already own the 305, it's cheaper to go out and buy a 350 block and simply rebuild it than it is to go through the stoking bit. Plus, the 350 comes out with more inches; more torque, more HP, goes faster, less money, less trouble.

Don't worry about sounding stupid. We were all newbies here at one time, and 99% of the folks answering questions here are really good eggs that don't lord it over those who are less knowledgeable

Thanks, y'all. I was confused when I heard about stroker kits, because it didn't sound at all like actually having the block stroked, and I had never heard of a stroker kit. Thanks again.

Yeah, besides... Some of the experienced people still sound stupid from time to time.
