HOw much $$$ for a rebuild???Opinions please

Okay.......I have a 91 Z28 Camaro with a 305 TPI.....and i want to rebuild the engine.........the engine has been acting up and i just wnat to have it rebuilt. I know, I know i should just upgrade to a 350, but I am currently building a 383 TPI stroker. HOw much would it cost me to have it rebuild. THis would be judging on a worst case scenario rebuild.

Also i have my T-5 that needs rebuilding.........or so i think it does.......3rd and 3th wont engage at all so i can only use 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse. HOw much would a tranny rebuild and to beef it up to withhold more hp.

Keep in mind i want to keep the 305 and the t-5.

blue_thunder91,

Since you said that the car is "acting up" that seems to indicate that it's still running. Therfore the rebuild (atleast for today) is probably not "Worst Case".

I paid a reputable and reasonably priced local machine shop $1000 (+/-) to do/provide the following which did NOT include assembly except for the heads.

Hot Tank Block & Professionally Inspect It & The Heads
Bore & Hone to .030 over
Grind & Polish Crank .010 under
Mill Heads -.010
Complete Gasket Set
Timing Set
Bearings (Crank, Rods, Cam)
Rings
Install Rods on Pistons
Install Cam Bears
Install four (4) New Exhaust Valves
Install new Freeze Plugs
All New Valve Springs
Assemble Heads
New Oil Pump

I also purchased a Comp Cam w/Lifters $180
New push rods & rockers $100 (?)

Knowing what I know now...... I don't think I would rebuild an engine. You can buy a BRAND NEW engine (305 or 350) from one of the big name outfits.... Summit, Scroggins-Dickey, etc. for about $1300!!! (+ $200 shipping)

My son and I worked together on the project and he and I have memories that will last a lifetime. It was great learning experience for him........ But if I just needed a good motor.... I buy a NEW long block!

Sincerely,
Kurt

throw the money you have for the rebuilt at that 383. how far along are you? why exactly do you need a rebuild?

Okay, okay..........i know what everyone is wondering..........why rebuild the 305 when ur building a 383??? the thing is im not going to drop the 383 in till i finsih the car completely.....which means suspension, differential, tranny, interior, the whole nine yards. I got about two more years till i get to that stage. I still to have it running as good as possible in the mean time and that is why i want a rebuild. The car feels like it has had a loss of power as of late. Its running good right now but it could run a whole lot better and thats what i want in the mean time. My tranny needs the rebuild and i just wanted to know how much it would cost to get the engine and tranny rebuilt. Cause i want to drive it soon and i cant.........especially without 3rd and 4th gear...............someone pulls up next to me and im a sitting duck without those two gears.

About the 383...........the block is at the machine shop and i am currently porting the heads........got the stroker kit already and should start assembly soon.......also gonna prep it for spray...not that i will ever put it on but i want it to be ready in case i get crazy

yes nitrous is fun
can be dangerous though, i got it sideways at about 35 on an interstate onramp and damn near lost control, was probably inches from the grass. not that i would ever use spray outside of a race track...

If your interested I have a 305 short block in my garage I just pulled 3 weeks ago. Ran mint, no smoke. Swapped it for a built 350.

I want it out of my garage ASAP. Pay the shipping and its yours. Still has the front cover and oil pan on it also. Otherwise I am sending it to the bone yard.

PM if your interested

Are you sure the bottom end is the problem? I think you might get away with a hone, new rings and bearings, valve job, springs, seals, new guides?, cam and lifters, timing set, gaskets, oil pump. Maybe cost you three or four hundred from PAW Depends on how worn out everything is I guess.

Use 305 blocks are being given away all day long. Mine has 130K on it but I bet it'd keep on running forever if I had kept it in the car. Get one for free, toss it in and pray it lasts. Saves you a $1000.

The real test of whether or not you need a rebuild is whether your car burns oil or not. If it burns very little or none at all, then that is not your problem. But, since we are on the topic of rebuilds, if all you want to do is clean up the bores, you can do that with a drill and a hone tool without even pulling the motor. All you need to do is remove the heads, the oil pan, push the pistons and rods through the top of the bores, and hone away. This is probably the worst method of doing it, but if you don't care about the motor then it will work.

But, if you're car is running weak, chances are its something ancillary to the motor; ignition, fuel delivery, maybe just your heads need to be rebuilt, one of the millions of sensors.

I'm not sure how much a manual tranny rebuild is, but one of the previous owners of my car had the 700r4 rebuilt for something like $650. It may be cheaper just to buy another used tranny(i've seen decent ones for as little as $100), or replace it with a th350 if you want to handle more power (the t5's aren't very good at that).

I had my old T5 rebuilt for 300.00 from a very nice shop in taylor/detroit Mi, when I walked into the place he had 100's of complete cases, trannys, etc. just for parts. The kulest thing was the road race only car sitting on a two post lift at the center of the shop, yep it was a thirdgen camaro I could get the number if you wanna go with a stock rebuild just PM me, otherwise ur prolly better off with the gforce T5 or whatever its called. Tremec TKO, LT1 six speed, richmond 5 speed would all be better choices IMO.
