tapping noise from freshly built motor

hey, just got the exhaust hooked back up, so its not as loud then just open headers.

i now hear a trapping noise coming from the motor.

i put on trick flow twisted wedge heads, 1.6 trick flow roller rockers, crane cam energizer .454 lift, edelbrock rpm air gap intake, edelbrock high rise elite 4249 valve covers.

now one think i noticed is the nut that screws onto the roller rockers is rather high, over an inch high, never seen one that high?

im guessing its the roller rockers hitting the valve covers, could it be any other possibilties, im hoping the valves arent hitting the pistons.

Try re-adjusting the valves. While the valve covers are off look and see if the rockers were hitting them. You say one of the nuts is higher than the rest, it could be that valve is way out of adjustment and the pushrod is bouncing around.

nono all the roller rockers have nuts that are like 1" or so

they are all the same, but seem to be realy high.

well the nuts don't move so if it's a tapping or ticking then it's more likely a rocker hitting the valve cover or you still could have a valve out of adjustment thats tapping away. Does it sound like it's coming from one side of the motor more t han the other?

you think if i set the valve lash, it would take the noise away?

Only if the noise is from a loose rocker. It could be a bent pushrod, broken valve spring, rocker hitting a valve cover, valve hitting a piston or one of any other hundred things. Pull the valve covers off and look for anything out of the ordinary. Go over the valves again which is a good idea on a new motor anyway and hopefully you'll find and correct the problem. It's awful hard to diagnose a problem if you can hear the noise, let alone try it over the internet. You're going to have to go out and work on the car. Hope this helps, let us know what you find.

ok so now i got a big *** leak under the vehicle, radiator fluid, i cant tell where abouts being the motor its leaking, but its dripping off the exhaust onto the ground. it could be the intake, but would be there anything else BESIDES the intake it could be leaking from, its kind of annoying. maybe i can just pour the silicone in behind there and stop if from leaking.. lol..

also the tapping noise im getting, goes away when i take off the valve covers, so maybe its the valve covers, but i got pretty big ones, Edelbrock Elite Series 4249. it is pretty loud when they are one, when i take em off, it just sounds like roller rockers going up and down. how will i fix this?

My rockers hit the valve covers when I got mine. They rubbed enough to clear .

you drove the car so that the rockers shaved enough off the valve covers to clear it?

1.5 Proform. The 1.6 might be the difference.

i see scratches, but its the noise mostly, my roller rockers tick with the valve covers off, i thought that was normal, they cant be that quiet.

but when i put the valve covers on its a real loud tick, not sure what it is.

Don't let them "clearance" themselves until they stop making noise. All that's doing is pumping METAL through your motor

well in my other post.

its my rockers that are making the noise, they keep coming loose, for fun i even tightened them so tight that the spring started to compress, and i started it, and a couple still came loose

im ****ed i think.

I think you might still have problems if they come loose after the correct adjustment is done. do the have poly locks or the old ball/nut setup? im figuring poly locks with roller rockers.

OK, with the car off you can usually get them close, 0 valve lash and maybe about 1/4 turn. Once its running and hot then you can get the proper adjustment.
