The oil is NOT coming out of the bolt hole... it can't. What's happening is you have oil leaking from somewhere else onto the top of the starter and it's running down the starter so that it "appears" that it's coming out of the hole. Blown rear main seal, blown head gasket, cracked block.... any of these things could be possible.

yeah i would say the oil tube, i know on my block the tube comes out right above the starter 86tpitransam is aboslutly right about the bolt hole. once i broke off both the starter bolts in the block and had to drill them out, so i too am absolutly sure that there is no way oil cam come from there uless your block is cracked. whats the problem, it dosnt start, if it does throw in some oil, and bring it back too your house.

even if its coming from somewhere else could oil getting on the starter cause it not to engage properly. the engine is an 86 350 crate motor, the dipstick tube is on the other side.

The oil is not coming out of the starter bolt hole, and it's not causing the starter to malfunction. I don't have to see the motor to know that.
Is this a mid-70s 350? If so, you have the usual thing that we all ran into at one time or another back in those days. Your block is incorrectly machined.
Do a search of all the boards for my posts containing the text "4347". I've gone over this issue in detail many times, but I don't feel like typing the whole explanation and cure all over again.
