New Motor but burning lost of OIL

Well here is the deal it smokes bad! At idle and at part throttle. It is all new. I have not ran a compression test yet however it has loads of power. I milled the heads about .035 do you believe thats enough to let oil seep in the bottom intake runners? Does the intake need milled? Do you believe its a seating problem with the rings? It has all new valve guides and seals.

Thanks for any help!

What intake gasket are you running Brian? The Fel-pro or the GM.
I've had both and I think that the GM is the better of the two.

I have the fel-pro with the rubber bead around the ports. The motor has about 800 miles on it. The motor has cast rings and hydro pistons as you can see in my sig.

Thanks all I need help.

did you build the motor? its possible that your intake gaskets are leaking oil into the heads, i just rebuilt my motor, .20 over with new rings and all, and it smoked for the first 5-10 minutes i ran it, doesnt smoke now and i've only put 200 miles on it

also i'm using the fel pro gaskets on my edelbrock performer manifold, with no problems.

One of my friends had a similar problem "new engine and unexplained oil loss, no leaks and no noticeable smoke". Come to find out he was running a set of M/T valve covers without any baffles at the pcv valve and the oil was being pumped into the intake and being burnt. A change of valve covers and the problem was solved. Maybe this might help.

a lot of freshly rebuilt engines will smoke at first. you aren't running synthetic oil are you? it isn't good for break ins. also you installed the rings top side up right? i've seen people do this that didn't know the differance. as a rule i start to worry about the intake if i take .025 or more off the heads, but that's not to say you couldn't take more with out problems.

Hey Brian I am going through the exact same
problem; new motor and still burning oil after 350 miles. I tried removing the intake
and resealing and it didn't help. Mine doesnt
smoke when first started for at least a minute so I don't think its the valve seals.
When its warmed up it smokes moderatly when
idling and looks like a fog machine when
revved..... I am about to pull the motor
and rebuild a brand new motor !!!!!!

Well the machine shop did the short block and I did break it in with 5W30 stanart Penzoil. I know the shop knows what side of the rings go up (I hope) but let me add there is NOTICABLE SMOKE!!! I can't figure it out.

ttt, I was there to see it smoke. It wasn't pretty. I'm afraid to think it's a ring problem only because it's gotten worse. If the car was run and driven while being super lean or super rich, doesn't that have an effect on the rings?
Could just end up being the valve guides and seals.

Yeah he was there, and it was bad. The valve seals are new and the guides were checked and found to be good.

What color is the smoke?
Blue = oil

white = coolant or trans fluid

Make sure you're not sucking oil up throu the PCV valve.
What lift cam did you use? Any thing over
.460" could be crushing the valve seal between the retainer and guide, if those vortecs are unmodified.

Well they may be, its all oil no question there. I have it in the shop now getting the Eaton posi and new gears in it and when it comes back I am going to run a compression test and see. The valve guides are unmodified and I am running the LT-4 cam so it could be.

Thanks To all
