My 305 TBI Pings like crazy
I was pinging so I ran 89 octane, it helped a little. Now I run 93, and it pings a tiny tiny tiny tiny bit... most people wouldn't enen notice it.
My timing is only 2* advanced... why does my car ping so much?
According to the manual, the car runs on 87 with a 0* timing.

Just a thought....
You might have to much carbon build up causing hot spots. Which in return are causing your premature igniting.

If you have carbon build up try this stuff.

I like Sea Foam, down the IAC valve bore. Makes it smoke like crazy. Then go blow it out real good.

I also heard that spraying small amounts of water into the tb while revving the motor cleans out carbon deposits... is that true?

The water trick sure does work. I slowly dribbled water into the throttle body from a measuring cup. Just bring the engine to 2-3000RPM and go slowly to avoid problems. Misting it in will work as well and is probably more safe than dribbling it in.

Re: My 305 TBI Pings like crazy
The only time the ECU will set a code for the EGR is if it senses that the EGR valve isn't opening.
The EGR could still be opening, but if the exhaust passages are plugged, exhaust gases will not get to the combustion chamber to cool the combustion process.
If the combustion process is too hot, you'll get pinging.
If the exhaust passages are plugged, no fuel tank additives or cleaners added to the crankcase will unplug them. The carbon has to be physically removed.
Re: My 305 TBI Pings like crazy
A small portion of exhaust gas is diverted into the arir/fuel mixture to cool the combustion process. This is done to lower NOx levels as a way to control exhaust emissions. This small portion of exhaust gas is diverted into the intake via the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, which consists of the EGR valve and passages which route exhaust gas into the intake tract.
