engine won't rev past 3000 *edited for new content*

edited for...
*look to the bottom*

ok, when i am crusing down the highway i am at abotu 1500 rpms. If i barely touch the accelerator the engine seems to cut out, but as soon as i let off the accelerator the engine comes back.
Also when i am sitting in park and slowly reving up the engine to 3000, as soon as it hits 3000 the engines just cuts off and falls down to about 2300 revs back to 3 then falls back down again. Sometimes it won't even get to 3, at 25-2700 it can cut out, and somtimes it drops to below 2000 when it cuts.
Either way it won't rev past 3000.
Anybody have any ideas as to what this could be?
It is an 89 iroc 350

Check your ignition timing, wires, cap, rotor and plugs first. Then change the fuel filter and test the fuel pressure.

If after all that, it still seems to have this rpm limitation, it will either be your injectors or possibly your timing chain has jumped a tooth.

I am assuming your SES light is not coming on and you are not having any sensor problems. If your SES light does not work, then you may wish to check for error codes and have a diagnostic ran on the engine. A flakey sensor can do weird things.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me...

I'd take the second part of Glenn's advice first and change the fuel filter, since it's cheap and needs it anyway if you haven't done it lately; then if it still does it, get a fuel pressure gauge and go from there.

Well my fuel pump just went out a few weeks ago so that is brand new, we also changed the fuel filter at the same time so that is new. Wires Cap rotor and plugs were replaced last April around the 20th or so. The CTS sensor is brand new, the TPS sensor checkes out. The only code is the one for the EGR. And i haven't had SES go off for that code in a while.

The only thing i haven't gotten around to change yet is the MAT sensor. I was told by vader to put the new one in the intake air box for some better readings. But that was because of some crappy cold engine idling. That couldn't be the cause of this could it?

I'll go check the timing and fuel pressure and see what i get. What should they be at?

Hey I just went to a siminar yesterday on engine electrical systems. They said that the most commong cause of engine bog under load and inability to run past 2 or 3K is most of the time the ignition module. Take urs off and take it to Advanced Auto and have it tested. Modules can still be bad and the car run.The high rpm part is the part of the test it will probably fail.

Is that right? Vader replied like a year after I last posted to this topic? heh, interesting.

Well, I rebuilt the engine last summer, so those old problems are gone. As soon as I fix my fpr and install new injectors, i'll post some new problems.

The only real problem I have now is this. When the car is at operating temperature and I sit and idle at a stop for too long, like a drive through, when I go to accelerate, it is completely bogged, it goes absolutely nowhere fast. After I let sit for a while, the problem goes away. Sounds like a bad converter to me.

Oh, and I think I fried my ecm, how can I properly test it to find out if it is actually fried?

I have to jump to vader's defense here. I was new to the board and doing searches on what could be wrong with my car (it was the converter. Hit it and listen for a rattle, or just undo your exhaust and run open headers to see if your problem goes away). I couldn't find your e-mail at the time ( old board style and there was no link with your post) so I mailed vader asking him for your address. He just went ahead and replied to the topic to bring it back to life.

oh, I understand.

I'll go out and beat on it It vibrates something fierce already though, but I think that is because of the shield on it.

well, i'll try my 2 cents on this one. remove the o2 sensor and see if you can rev any higher than 3grand (if cat is backed up, exhaust will have a place to go). now here is what i really think is wrong (well only if you have a tpi) when your fuel pump went bad, the guy at the auto parts store may have given you a fuel pump for a tbi...9-13 lbs of fuel pressure instead of the tpi fuel pump which i believe is around 40-45 lbs of fuel pressure. check fuel pressure and see what it is at idle. i have seen this happen before. best of luck, and let us know those fuel pressure numbers!

Re: engine won't rev past 3000

Time to bring this thread back to life, I have this EXACT same problem! Any clues? The original posting was a 350ci 89 camaro... Mine is a 305ci TBI 1992 camaro.

Same exact issue here. I'm stumped! It's 110 degrees outside, my car is parked in the sun, and ive been working on it for days trying to figure this out.

Re: engine won't rev past 3000

Lol.. Well I'd read the advice provided from the previous posts as it's all good information. I don't remember the exact solution to my problem so follow their advice and see what you find.

Good Luck!

Re: engine won't rev past 3000

Well considering this has already been brought back, might as well say i have the same probkem. Revs up to a little over 3 grand and falls on its face and holds there, let off and let the tranny shift and into the next gear for it to only happen again
