timing chain replacing
I know this topic has been hit on many times but i need to know before i go out tomorrow and ruin anything else. how should the crank and cam gears line up. this is a 305 and i've got #1 at TDC. I've heard that the dots should line up with the cam dot at 6oclock and the crank dot at 12oclock. but wouldn't that put me 180* out ? I thought that with #1 at TDC, both gears should be at 12 oclock.
also, i have not taken the dist. out. and the rotor is pionted at #1.

both dots touching each other is TDC for #6 cylinder. both dots at the top of the gears is TDC for #1 cylinder. you would be 180 out unless you put the rotor on #6 cylinder with both dots touching. hope this helps

nothing has happened yet, i think i've messed up the threads on the crank though. i'll know better in thr morning when i go back out. but thanks for the info, i've got the gears just sitting on there in the 12 and 12 position. so i'll tighten everything down tomorrow.

thanks alot people, got everything put back together execpt the water pump. i did crank it over to see if it would start. it did, i'm happy. called it quits for now and i'll finish it on tuesday.
funny thing is it started with my compression gauge still plugged into the #1 cylinder (guess i was in too big of a hurry to take it out) but all is well and i like my car once again.
