Ca. Emissions tests..do these numbers make sense ?

1987 Firebird, 305 V*, 4 barrel carburetor, automatic transmission, California Emission equipped.I hope this is readable and not too long. I replaced almost everything between 1999 and 2001 (5000 mi ago) and still it won't pass, even used Denatured Alcohol for the last test.

Looks like he is failing HC, nothing else that I can see in that mess.

15 MPH Meas:128 Max:110
25 MPH Meas:166 Max:85

15 MPH Meas:100 Max:110
25 MPH Meas:105 Max:85

15 MPH Meas:190 Max:110
25 MPH Meas:161 Max:85

Seems to be a wide variance in the readings. What were the ambient and engine temps on those tests, anything unusual between the tests?

Ok, sorry it took so long but I think this link will straighten out the mess of numbers:
http://www.geocities.com/ritchy_ca/i...1006727271858. Sorry I'm not so good at this yet. Rich

IS it possible that my oxygen sensor bit the dust after 5,000 miles ?
The car seems to run perfect. Is it the cat ?
I'm tired of throwing parts at it.
Thanks.

From the readings, I think your cat is fine. Its either running a little rich (probably not the o2 sensor either) or the timing is off. Check that all the plug wires are on right, and take a look at the balancer and see if it looks like it has slipped.

Here in California the station checks the timing. It has to be set to the sticker under the hood, which in my case is 0 degrees. It runs better at 10 degrees. I know that the last mechanic let the car get cold and I think he didn't get it hot enough before he checked it. I also think that the mechanic who diagnosed and adjusted it didn't check the tps voltage. I intend to do that today. And anything else I can before I go to the trouble to replace the cat. Thanks for your input.
Rich

Your o2 reading isnt high enough for the cat to be bad, unless its clogged, but I doubt it. Either it was too cold to work properly, or the car is just running to rich and it cant clean it up enough. Replacing it wont help.

I live in Cali, I know about the smog tests. Just because they set the timing does not mean its correct. If the balancer slipped and then they set the timing, then your actual timing is wrong. Only way to check that is to check the balancer for obvious movement, otherwise you will have to put the #1 piston at TDC and see if the marks line up.

Since its carbed, you may also want to check that all the vacuum hoses are in the right places and not cracked/leaking.

I checked the balancer and the timing b4 I took it in to the 1st mechanic. He checked all the plug wires and vaccum lines. I researched it and found that I rebuilt the carb after the 99 smog. Yesterday I reset the TPS from .6 to .47 volts, lowered the float, and cleared a code 41 (probably from the last smog check where the mechanic couldn't start it, I have a kill switch on the coil and I think he tried to bypass it). Today I am replacing the thermostat and the sensor I broke getting the housing off. Then I might take it in again and see.

Ok, so I replaced the temp sensor and thermostat, changed the carb hanger from D back to the M and the CH rods it came with, and changed the purge solenoid. Still have the 3 to 1 ratio denatured alcohol and 87 octane mix, checked the charcoal canister-is dry, am replacing worn hoses going to it, and it still won't pass. The numbers are better but now instead of high HC and CO, I am high NOx. Max at 15/25 mph is 1025/85 and I did 1500/1215 last time I did 656/1307 and the time before I did 884/1010. Any suggestions ?

I take it you have a 3 way cat? High nox is usually the cat. If the air injection (divertor valve etc.) isn't injecting air into the 3 way cat that would do it. Good luck-with tpi it's easier for me, but I know about the PIA Ca. smog.....

State's inspection results: bad cat, plugged egr passage, and carb problems

So now the info gets faxed from the mechanic to the state to see if the state will allow them to fix the problems.
