Should I use a high volume oil pump??

Ok you guys, I just read the “350 buildup plans, Input appreciated” thread and it said that the high volume oil pumps are not worth it. Well I have already bought that oil pump it’s a Moroso high volume, standard pressure and got the matching pump and pick up for my oil pan (Milodon 7qts, will clear up to a 4” stroke). Are there any major reasons why I should not use that pump. Look at my combo in my sig. Thanks you guys

Lots of stories of them sucking pans dry, and that the added volume is not needed.

Now that you already have it you may as well use it.

It's not necessary unless you plan on spinning past 7,500rpm or making like 900hp. This according to Lingenfelter's book and hot rod's "how to build big inch small blocks". The chevy oiling system is already darn good the only upgrades reccommended are: a welded pickup tube, properly setting the distance from pan to pickup, smoothed return holes, screens, windage tray, baffles in the pan, cooler, blocking off the filter bypass, etc..

I have a high volume pump that came with my crate engine about 8 years back, since then I've replaced two rear main seals and now the front seal is leaking. I would like to blame the high volume pump for that, tho I can't be sure of it worn out rings dont' help either!

I doubt that you'll empty a 7 quart pan so long as the relief valve is working and oil drainbacks are clear. The output volume of a HV pump versus a standard pump is only about 20% higher, and the relief spring is set to limit pressure to under 60 PSI. As a result, the pump will simply go into recirculation once the oil needs of the engine are satisfied at 60 PSI. The only problem may be constantly hitting the relief valve at a lot lower RPM.

Thanks you guys! I may go ahead and buy a standard volume pump, I know that they aren’t too expensive. If the high volume pump is the cause of a two leaky rear seals I sure want to stay away from that. Thanks again for the advice.

I just found out a trick on the last rear main: On two piece rear seals you can offset the pieces a little bit so that the line doesn't match up with the line on the bearing cap/block. The trick must have worked since I haven't had a problem with it since. I think going with the standard m55 is a good move, I don't plan on using a HV pump in my latest engine and it should make about twice the numbers my lil 350 is putting down.

That’s a good trick that you have for the rear seal, Ill have to keep that in mind for later. I can’t use that trick since I have a one piece rear seal. O well hopefully I don’t run into a leaky rear seal. I do remember one of my friends telling me that a leaky Chevy is a sign of a healthy motor! Well thanks again for the advice for the oil pump.
