Help Setting Valve Lash
Help Setting Valve Lash
I have your average 5.7L TPI mill. I have reason to believe a resent rebuild has left the valve lash adjusted improperly. Which method is best for my hydralic roller lifters; with the engine running or by rotating it into position by hand? Has anyone done this before?
thanks

I did mine with the engine running. Back off the nut until you hear the valve tapping. Then tighten it back until it stops. Simple as that. Worked nice for me until one of the threads for my rocker sutde stripped out. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........
If you don't fab up some sort of shield for the oil it will splash all over the headers though.

what i did after my new cam a while back was to find when the number one cylinder was on compression and then went with what the haynes manual said to set the valve at. i just tapped the key to turn the engine. it is better than spewing oil all over.

The oil comes up through the pushrods. The rockers sling it around pretty good.

I did it both ways. When it was all said and done the LITTLE bit of oil slung around was worth it to do it with the car running, its a WHOLE lot faster.
I took a piece of cardboard and cut it to shape and stuck it on either side of the head, backed the nut off untill I heard the ticking then tightened it up untill It stopped, and then went 1/2 turn after that.
