Distributor Hold-Down Bolt?

I just got a Timing Light for christmas and decided I would try it out and check my timing.

I read the FAQ on how to set your timing, and I understand it all, but does anybody have any tips on how to get the distributor hold down bolt off? I can't squeeze any swivel joint socket/open end wrench/special tool in there because there is so much junk in the way. I am not having good luck working on this car, I get frustrated easily because everything is just built on top of everything else in this car.

Turns out my timing is 1 or 2+ retarded, can't really tell too well, so I need to advance it a little bit and people say "just put an open end wrench on it". Yeah right, I guess after you remove the TBI unit, manifold and everything else under the hood it's that easy.

And yes, the air cleaner is removed, somebody help me please!

Spend $10, and get a dizzy wrench.

I hate to say it, but "just put an open end wrench on it" lol. That's how I get mine anyways. I guess it depends on the wrench, and it's length, as to how well it works. There is such a thing as a dizzy wrench - you could probably get at a parts store - it's angled and bent to get at that frustrating sucker.

I'm terrible at it myself, but a little patience goes a long way with a Chevy.

With the afore mentioned distributor wrenches you can loosen the hold down bolt without removing anything. You do not need to remove it. Just loosen it.

I just did mine too, you have to use a tool that is like a open end wrench but its just the open end end and it goes on a half inch drive or extension socket. It might be a distributer bolt wrench like they say.

Thank you so much everybody.

I was getting so frustrated with it, I had no idea they even made such a tool like that.

Again, thanks alot. I appreciate all the help.

Sometimes its all about having the right tools for the job. Cheap Dist. wrench makes it easy.

Yea, I just went to Autozone and picked up one for 5 bucks, worked great. (A lot easier than trying to use a socket or open-end wrench)
