stock extrude honed intake vs aftermarket

does anyone know how well you can get a stock l98 intake to flow after its been extrude honed to the max as opposed to an aftermarket one like tpis big mouth or edelbrock etc. i have 3 stock intakes and in the middle of building a drag car with afr 195 heads on it and trying to save as much money as possible CAN A STOCK TPI INTAKE BE MADE TO FLOW ENOUGH TO HANDLE THESES HEADS IS MY QUESTION?

Flow is not the problem with the TPI its the length of the runners. Its much more of an impedance and harmonics issue than flow. Its physically impossible to make power above 5-5500 rpm.

I was contemplating this idea except adding a superram upper and runners. Im wondering how this would perform on a fully ported stock intake.

i know, but a superram will come later

i realize the runners are to long but i figure if im gonna do the heads i mights well do the intake manifold, heads and cam at the same time and add a superram upper later. But either way im still gonna have to either modify my stock intake or buy a new one from tpis, edelbrock , accel or somebody but my question still remains, CAN THE STOCK INTAKE MANIFOLD BE MADE TO FLOW AS WELL AS ONE OF THE AFOREMENTIONED AFTER MARKET INTAKES...........anybody know if there is enough material on the stock intake to open it up as much as one of the aftermarket suppliers intakes?

Yes look here. Get the big mouth gaskets. Im sure it could work pretty well with the superram upper.

Preston Smith I believe the name is had a 10 ro 9 sec supercharged 305 with a extrude honed stocker intake on it.

Later went to turbo and running even faster now and I think its still the extruded base on it.

Do a search, there are flow numbers here for an extrude honed stock intake somewhere. If memory serves it flowed almost identical to a super ram.

Be forewarned, I think doing a set of runners and a base is like 700-800$ or so.

It works wonders, but you pay for wonders.

Like the post above and something Smurfin' and I have both done, there is a lot to be had with a stock base and some judicious porting if u have the means and time. It will work great for u on a budget or as a short term solution.

Search for a spot called prototype intakes. I took pictures of my GM proto TPI setup and in the pictures I compare it to my ported stock base that I have. U can see the improvement on the base much like SMurfin pics.

later
